Rich Skrosky adds assistant coaches to staff

Elon University head football coach Rich Skrosky announced the addition of several assistant coaches to his staff: Damian Wroblewski, Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Most recently the offensive line coach at Rutgers University, Wroblewski helped to guide the Scarlet Knights to the 2013 New Era Pinstripe Bowl and the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl.

Semiconductor technologies key to revitalizing U.S. manufacturing industry

Earlier this week, President Barack Obama announced that North Carolina State University will serve as the head of his manufacturing technologies initiative.  This public-private partnership between universities, companies and research institutions will work to create more efficient and sustainable methods of powering electronics. For the past 50 years, electronic devices have relied on silicon-based semiconductors to convert electrical energy into power.

Elon Law's new dean to build on university's strengths

The Elon University School of Law now has its third dean, with Luke Bierman taking over for the school’s previous dean, George Johnson, starting June 1. Before accepting the position at Elon, Bierman was a distinguished professor of practice of law at Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, as well as the school’s associate dean of experiential learning. Faith Rivers James, professor of law and co-chair of the search committee for the school’s dean, said the committee looked for candidates who could use the strengths of Elon to improve the relatively young law school. “Elon’s outstanding record in terms of engaged learning is an important foundation for the law school,” James said. James said Bierman’s background and experience shows that he can combine university education with practical, hands-on teaching.

Former faculty member Alexis Kamerman dies in Taliban attack in Afghanistan

Last Friday, Elon University lost former faculty member Alexis Kamerman in an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.  Kamerman served as assistant director of residence life for the East Residence Area from 2012 to 2013. In June 2013, Kamerman took a job at the American University of Afghanistan.  She wanted to inspire young women to seek higher education.

Elon book launch ties to Periclean scholars work in Mexico

On Friday, the Periclean Scholars at Elon University held an event to launch the book Aquí & Allá/Here and There. Campus and community members gathered as author Blanca Zendejas Nienhaus and others who had connections to the book spoke. At the event, Blanca gave a brief overview of the book and noted its association with the Periclean Scholars class of 2013. Elon’s Periclean Scholars program is a part of Project Pericles, a national non-profit organization that encourages colleges and universities to prepare students for global citizenship.

'The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind' chosen as common reading for next school year

The recently selected 2014-2015 common reading selection, William Kamkwamba’s “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” is designed to show incoming students the world through the eyes of a boy growing up in third world Malawi, one of Africa’s poorest countries. The nonfiction book was chosen by the Elon Common Reading Program (ECRP) to combat stereotypes and poverty through ingenuity, according to Jeffrey Coker, chair of the ECRP and director of general studies. “It’s empowering,” he said.

Disney and the 21st Century: Redefining happily ever after

At this point, we have all heard the commercials for Disney’s newest animated film, “Frozen,” that advertise critics who call the film Disney’s best since “The Lion King.” While this is still an opinion open for interpretation, the numbers at the box office are beginning to tell the same story. “Frozen” quickly became Disney’s number one all-time animation debut and, according to Time magazine, has grossed $669 million so far without having gone worldwide.

Zumbathon garners higher energy, greater turnout in 2014

Students clapped, danced and wobbled their way through Zumbathon Jan. 17 in Jordan Gym. Zumba group exercise instructors led the two-hour event, which attracted lively participants. "We had a really good turnout," said Emily Armstrong, team leader of Group Exercise. "We had a lot of people sign up in advance and a lot of people come the day of and high energy this year.

Former Elon staff member killed while working in Afghanistan

Former Assistant Director of Residence Life for the East Residence Area, Alexis Kamerman, known as Lexi, was killed Friday evening during an attack on a restaurant in Kabul, Afghanistan, according to an email from Smith Jackson Saturday evening. Kamerman, a 27-year-old Chicago native, was working in residence life at the American University of Afghanistan. Her family released this statement to the Chicago Tribune via an email from her aunt, Julie Pfeffer: "She was an amazing young woman -smart, strong, beautiful, funny, stubborn and kind.

Stage is set for classic championship weekend

Football fans are used to seeing future Hall of Famers like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady duke it out on the biggest stage.  On the other hand, fans are not so used to seeing the new, more mobile generation of quarterbacks in the spotlight.  This year, football fans will get to see the best of both worlds.  Manning-Brady is the classic matchup that everyone will be watching, but the newcomers, Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks and Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers, look to leave their own mark on the history books and advance to face one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Freshman duo grows up fast for Phoenix

In a season defined by adjustment, opportunity and growth, two rookies have helped steady Elon women’s basketball when it mattered most. Freshman center Tamia Watkins controls the paint and freshman guard Ashanti Fox controls the pace. The rookies have combined to earn Coastal Athletic Association Rookie of the Week honors for four straight weeks, going back to Jan. 19.
