Service in Solidarity

The assistant director for the Center for Race, Ethnicity and Diversity Education (CREDE), Bell, knew that the event was celebrated annually at Elon University, a similar trend for the majority of college campuses. But Bell wanted to be different in honoring the civil rights icon. When he sat down to think, the question Bell wanted answered was how Elon would do the greatest amount of service involving the most amount of people.

Greek Life: Through the haze

In recent months, the conversation around hazing has become a national conversation. In 2017, four student deaths involving hazing became viral stories, bringing the conversation around the all-too-frequent Greek life practice to Elon. According to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, 42 percent of Elon’s student population belongs to a Greek organization. With National Panhellenic and the Interfraternity Council recruitment happening at the end of the month, Elon said it is preparing to counteract the hazing trend, should it arise.

N.C. congressional districts to be redrawn after accusations of partisan gerrymandering

On Jan. 9, 2018, the federal district court ruled against the North Carolina legislature’s motion to redraw 13 congressional districts. This is the first time that the federal court has ruled against gerrymandering on a partisan basis. Jessica Carew, assistant professor of political science, explains the federal district court’s decision to redraw the North Carolina congressional map.

Fairways and family: How one set of brothers is keeping a trend alive on the men's golf team

One is left-handed and the other is right-handed. One is a redshirt-senior and the other is a freshman. Both play for the Elon University men’s golf team representing the same last name. Hailing from Westwood, Massachusetts, brothers Patrick and Will Frodigh ended up together at Elon by chance. Patrick transferred twice, spending two years at the University of Denver, a year at the University of Louisville, and then entering Elon for his final two years.

Elon gets decisive win over CAA rival Charleston

The Elon University men’s basketball team (12-7, 4-2) beat league-favorite College of Charleston (12-6, 3-3) in Alumni Gym 63-58 Saturday night as they continued Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The Phoenix came into the contest having won just one of their last eight matchups against the Cougars.

“A stinging loss.” That is how Elon University men’s basketball head coach Matt Matheny described Thursday’s game as his team fell on their home hardwood for the first time this season, dropping an OT thriller to the defending conference champion University of North Carolina at Wilmington, 80-78.

  Junior Lucy White remembers first selling and showcasing her abstract paintings at “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” a mother-daughter event of the Gamma Nu Chapter of Phi Mu during the Fall of 2016. It was not until a mother asked her about the price when she realized the potential her artwork had.
