Alamance County Commissioners increase funding and discuss county coronavirus cases, vaccination efforts

The Alamance County Board of Commissioners passed motions to increase funding for the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office and Alamance Community College at their Feb. 15 meeting. The commissioners also discussed the decreasing COVID-19 infection rate in the county and the North Carolina vaccination plan.

Elon football prepares for spring season

Elon University’s football team is coming off of a long break and is ready to approach this spring season. Although weather and practice schedules are different, head coach Tony Trisciani said the team’s goals remain the same: win one game per week, win the Colonial Athletic Association Championship and compete for a national championship.

Some members of the university community want the new director to establish relationships with different communities across campus.The yearlong search is coming to close after final candidate Joe LeMire presented to students, faculty and staff on campus.

Vital Signs a cappella group to host their seventh annual Make-A-Wish benefit concert

Vital Signs’ annual Make-A-Wish benefit concert will visually be different, but still showcase their talent and philanthropic work. The concert will be streamed on YouTube premiere Friday at 7 p.m. Members of the a cappella group said they will put on a show that will “feel like a concert,” but through a screen. This year's theme is "Spread the Love" as the concert takes place days before Valentine's Day.

SGA discusses high alert COVID-19 status, overrides veto on study abroad bill

In the first business meeting of the new semester, Elon University student government representatives discussed the status of COVID-19 at the university as the campus moves to Level 2 — High Alert on Feb. 11, and voted to override a vetoed bill that would allow students studying abroad to run for senate.

Elon Athletics announces limited fan attendance for spring football season

Rhodes Stadium will welcome back fans during the coronavirus pandemic after Elon Athletics announced today that the stadium will operate at 7% capacity during the spring football season. Tickets are $20 and will be sent via email. There will be no general admission seating in the stadium and reservations will determine seating.

Elon School of Education has hosted ‘white caucus’ since fall, now faces backlash

Elon University’s School of Education planned to host, for the second semester in a row, a “white caucus” for “white-identifying” education majors or minors. As of Feb. 10, the program has been canceled. The program, which had the goal to explore race and systemic oppression in education, comes after a summer of protests against racial injustice.

Elon men’s basketball loses to James Madison in second game of series

Following two postponed games, the Elon University men’s basketball team took to the hardwood against the James Madison University Dukes at Schar Center for the first time since December in a Tuesday-evening Colonial Athletic Association matchup. The Dukes came out victorious 70-61 on the back of senior guard Matt Lewis’ 22 points.

Elon University narrows down 2021 commencement plans

The school has announced three potential formats for commencement: a fully virtual option with no in-person gatherings, an in-person ceremony with a limited number of guests that would be live-streamed and an in-person ceremony for students only that would be live-streamed for all others. A final decision for the format is expected to be announced no later than March 26.

Weekly COVID-19 testing gives some students security during pandemic

With a new semester comes new COVID-19 protocols at Elon University. All students will now be tested weekly for the coronavirus, a change from the fall semester that began over Winter Term. For some students weekly testing makes them feel more secure on campus.

Elon alumni find work while theaters remain dark

During a time where live theatre is at a standstill, Broadway professionals and Elon alumni have taken to television acting and even Tik Tok to continue their careers. One alumnus J.J.  Niemann starred in “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” which has raised over $2 million for The Actor’s Fund, a charity that supports workers in the performing arts and entertainment industries.

Elon students weigh staying home for spring semester

The academic experience — all-nighters in the library, lab experiments, class field trips and connecting with professors during office hours — are all aspects of in-person instruction that have been redesigned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, students are adjusting to an online learning environment as virtual instruction has become widely prevalent in the education process over the past 11 months.

Daniel J. Watts selected as Elon 2021 commencement speaker

The musical theatre alumnus is set give the commencement address on May 21, 2021. Plans for the class of 2021 and 2020  commencement have not been finalized. According to the press release, commencement plans will be announced on March 26.

He presented his background, leadership philosophy, their vision for campus policing and the challenges and opportunities in campus policing to students, faculty and staff, as part of the fifth and final stage of the interview process.

Alamance County Commissioners approve 25,000 square foot COVID-19 vaccine site

The approval of the indoor space comes after Tony Lo Giudice, the Alamance County health director, told the board that the county’s demand for COVID-19 vaccinations is growing. The new indoor vaccination site will help with the county’s growing demand and is set to be leased for at least 3 months starting Feb. 1. The lease cost for the space will be $23,958.33 per month and can be renewed on a monthly basis

President Book welcomes home new puppy

A mere four pounds and full of energy, this week, Elon University President Connie Book welcomed home her new dog, Beaux Oakley. The 12-week-old Yorkshire Terrier was adopted from a breeder in Oak Ridge; a town about 35 miles west from Elon.
