Elon University club and intramural sports hope for return to normal

When Elon University sent students home in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, club and intramural sports came to an abrupt halt. While Elon offered them during the 2020-21 academic year, social restrictions forced a reduction in offerings and protocols. Now, 17 months after the pandemic began, there is hope that club and intramural sports are finally returning to normal.

Elon football falls to Wofford 24-22

The full football atmosphere of tailgating and fans in the stands was back at Rhodes Stadium celebrating the inaugural game of the 2021 season and the 20th anniversary of the stadium's opening. The fans roared when the theme of T.I.’s iconic “Bring Em Out” played as the Phoenix made their way onto the field.

For the first 92 years of Elon University football, the program did not have a stadium on campus to call home.  That all changed in 2001 when Rhodes Stadium opened up, with the opening of an on-campus venue built specifically to host Elon football.

Enrollment and exemptions: complying with Elon University's vaccine mandate

Vaccine exemptions forms rolled into Dean of Students Jana Lynn Patterson’s email when the university declared a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all students. While the university reached 96% of its undergraduate students fully vaccinated, only 307 vaccine exemptions were approved. There’s an additional number that Elon has reached: zero student disenrollments after the vaccine requirement.

Elon volleyball falls to Duke

DURHAM, NC — Elon University’s women’s volleyball team lost to the Duke University Blue Devils in straight sets (20-25, 22-25, 16-25). Despite absorbing much of the Blue Devils attack, the Phoenix was unable to generate enough offense to take a set in Durham.

Benevolence Farm launches tiny house initiative

In efforts to support formerly incarcerated women and advocate for social justice issues in Alamance County, Kristen Powers joined Benevolence Farm as interim executive director. Now, nearly four years later, she hopes to give back to the residents of Benevolence Farm through launching a tiny house initiative — just one more way to get residents back on their feet.

El Centro, CREDE host Carnaval celebration in McKinnon Hall

Mckinnon Hall was decorated in gold, green and red on Feb. 25 as students came together for Elon’s Carnaval celebration, a festival celebrated across Latin America before Lent begins. The event featured food, crafts and performances from Elon’s drum line and traditional Afro-Brazilian dance.

Elon to adopt new learning management system following fall review of Moodle platform

Students logging into their courses next academic year may notice a shift in how assignments, grades and course materials are organized as Elon transitions from Moodle, its old learning management system, to Canvas by Instructure, its new one. The decision followed a campuswide evaluation of Moodle that included surveys and open forums, according to Teaching and Learning Technologies Senior Director Kelly Reimer.
