Big weekend looms for Elon women's soccer

As the final weekend of non-conference play approaches for the Elon University women’s soccer team, many questions about the rest of the season will be answered, all while supporting a great cause Sunday afternoon against Francis Marion. Last season, Elon welcomed the High Point University Panthers to Rudd Field for a non-conference matchup.

SGA Confirms Homecoming Concert

The Elon University Student Government Association, in partnership with the Student Union Board, confirmed that Chris Webby and We The Kings are the performers for the 2012 Homecoming Concert. The concert will be held "Under The Oaks" on Friday, October 19 at 8 p.m.

25th annual Burlington Carousel Festival offers affordable fun for community

New York City has the Empire State Building, Los Angeles has the Hollywood sign and Burlington has the Dentzel Menagerie Carousel. But don’t underestimate its influence – the 100-year-old carousel is the reason for the beloved annual Burlington Carousel Festival, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary this weekend. “The festival is centered around the historic carousel,” said Mary Faucette, special events supervisor for the Burlington Recreation & Parks Department.

Rusie Dixon Suggs, aunt of Communications Internship Director Nagatha Tonkins, is missing. The family of 90-year-old is offering a $2000 reward for any pertinent information that leads to her safe return. [div class="alignleft"] [/div] Mrs. Suggs of Burlington was reported missing Monday after family members could not reach her Sunday and Monday.

9/11 anniversary incites interfaith dialogue

The 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States continues to influence campus discussions and prompt Elon University to promote an atmosphere of peace and tolerance. In order to advance student discussion, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life held “Interact With Respect: 9/11 Dialogue” on the 11th anniversary of the attacks.

Call to Honor ceremony refines university values

The prominent four words in the honor code-- honesty, integrity, responsibility and respect -- encompass the values of the institution, and the Call to Honor ceremony demonstrates Elon University students' commitment to those principles. Although University President Leo Lambert leads the pledge to the honor code, students conduct the majority of the ceremony. "We knew from the beginning (of developing the tradition) we wanted students talking to students," said Mary Wise, associate vice president of academic affairs. [quote]I hope (the honor code) affects the way students interact with each other outside of the classroom, and I want them to be positive and affirming.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
