Educate yourself on MLK, educate yourself on today

Before taking my Winter Term class this year, IDS224: “Non-Violence and Civil Rights," my classmates and I dreaded learning more about the historic Civil Rights Movement. I didn’t believe that I would gain anything new from the class and saw learning the material as an obligation. However, I am happy to say that I was proved wrong: that as I read and engaged, I found there was so much I still had to learn. Contrary to my prior belief, the Civil Rights Movement was far more than a bus boycott and a few marches. Most importantly, the Civil Rights Movement was about more than just civil rights. At its core, the movement was truly about human rights.

Healthcare, gun violence, education major focus at Democratic presidential debate

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) and former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley engaged in one of the livelier debates thus far in race to secure the Democratic Party presidential nomination on Sunday, Jan. 17. With education and healthcare at the front of the debate, the candidates expressed much disagreement.

Bill and Chelsea Clinton campaign for Hillary Clinton in Des Moines, IA

With the former president and first daughter at opposite ends of a "Fighting for us" campaign sign, the two explained to the crowd why the former First Lady and Secretary of State is right for the job. "Everything I care most about is at stake in this election." said Chelsea Clinton. She listed issues such as a women's right to choose, climate change, and core American values that she said have been "under significant assault". "I've known my mom my whole life," Chelsea Clinton joked to the crowd, "And I think that's pretty awesome." She then turned the microphone over to Bill Clinton, who she said has known Hillary Clinton longer. Former president Clinton echoed similar statements President Obama made in his State of the Union address. In regards to the economy, Clinton said, "We are the best positioned big country in the world." He also discussed the decreasing life expectancy of non-college educated, middle-aged white people. "These people are dying of a broken heart because they think the American Dream is out of reach." he said. He concluded that Hillary Clinton will not give up on those people as president and work to give all Americans a better life. Hillary Clinton returns to the state Monday for an organizing event in Toledo, IA.

MLK's influence remains visible at Elon University

When James Earl Ray’s bullet pierced the skull of Martin Luther King Jr., he inadvertently catalyzed the United States — a nation whose fabrics were embedded with racial tension and hostility — to resolve its differences. Martin Luther King Jr.'s short life and early death created a rallying cry as blacks and whites labored intensively to create a world where they would not be judged the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Yet as the nation celebrates his annual holiday this year, many African-Americans feel King's visions for social justice and equality are far from achieved. Elon University is no exception to the ongoing conversations about race relations in the United States.

More than 60 Elon University students and parents gathered inside Yeager Recital Hall Saturday, Jan. 17 for Elon Cares: Equity Fights AIDS 11th annual benefit concert.

Women's basketball pummeled by Drexel, 74-31

The Elon University women's basketball team was playing from behind all day in Philadelphia, falling to Drexel University, 74-31.  The Phoenix were trounced out of the gates, falling into a 20-8 hole after the first quarter and a 38-19 deficit by halftime. Elon had no answer for junior forward Sarah Curran, who went for 22 points and seven rebounds on 9-of-14 shooting, to go with a pair of threes, including 18 points in just the first half alone.  Essence Baucom and Shay Burnett led the way for the lagging Phoenix, with seven points apiece.

At the event, Rubio focused on appealing to demographics from millennials to Baby Boomers. He discussed his plan to make some changes to Social Security and Medicare, but not to get rid of these programs like other candidates have suggested.

Accessing public buses in Alamance County: Link Transit prepares for summer launch

Link Transit Manager Mike Nunn began helping plan a public busing system in 2006 for Alamance County. Today, the 10-year project is nearly complete and is expected launch this summer.

Chris Christie returns to Iowa with multiple campaign stops

The Republican presidential candidate greeted supporters over breakfast while also having conversations about topics such as the economy, the military, and healthcare with some diners. Christie then traveled 45 minutes to Ames to host a town hall meeting at the Brick City Grill.

Women's basketball can't stop Towson late in loss

The Elon University women’s basketball team could not stop Towson University in the fourth quarter, giving up 37 points en route to a 85-78 Colonial Athletic Association loss Friday night. With the game tied at 48 after three periods, Elon gave up eight straight points in a two-minute, 50-second stretch to fall behind by double-digits with the Tigers.

Late 3-pointer elevates men's basketball over College of Charleston

Freshman forward Tyler Seibring finished his career night with an offensive rebound and an assist, finding freshman guard Dainan Swoope for a 3-pointer to lift the Elon University men’s basketball team over Colonial Athletic Association rival College of Charleston 65-64 Saturday afternoon. Swoope’s basket from behind-the-arc with 20 seconds left meant Elon needed one final stop, which it got thanks to sophomore guard Dmitri Thompson’s efforts on the defensive end.

30 members of the Elon community gathered together for a CommUNITY dinner on Thursday, Jan. 14 in Green World at 1889 to exchange ideas for how to promote a more inclusive environment at Elon University.

Students attend Burst the Bubble classes aligning with their personal interests

Elon University students are taking additional courses outside the classroom during Winter Term. These courses offer no credit and provide no homework. Winter Term “Burst the Bubble” classes allow students to take non-academic courses that peak their interest.
