Advancing diversity, equity and inclusion for faculty and staff

The working group for diversity, equity and inclusion of the academic council — the governing body over faculty — is working to include information addressing bias in the faculty handbook, particularly with regard to evaluation for faculty. The university is also working to redesign the bias response system and will debut a new training program for all university employees.

Elon celebrates Love Your Body Week as it coincides with National Eating Disorder Awareness Week

Feb. 22 through 26 is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, which will coincide with the sixth year of Campus Recreation and Wellness’ Love Your Body Week. Campus Rec is working in partnership with Counseling Services, Elon Dining, the Produce Box and several other sponsors to create a week of events to promote all aspects of loving one’s body mentally, physically and emotionally.

​Gov. Roy Cooper lifts modified stay-at-home order as NC COVID-19 cases decline

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced at a press conference on Wednesday that the modified stay-at-home order in the state will be lifted on Friday at 5 p.m. The order, which was originally put in place after North Carolina saw an influx of COVID-19 cases after the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, is being lifted after the state has seen a downward trend in cases for the last few months, according to Cooper.

After the National Labor Relations Board reaffirmed the non-tenure track faculty members’ right to unionize, Elon University’s Academic Council and chapter of the Association of American University Professors both released statements urging the university to begin bargaining with the union.

Greek life organizations forced to pause in-person activities

Greek life organizations, the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils, are now working to revise their plans for recruitment after Elon University ordered all fraternity and sorority activity to move to completely virtual environments. The order, issued to greek organizations Sunday, aims to limit small group interactions amid the coronavirus pandemic after multiple reports of parties and unmasked social gatherings.

Breaking down SGA's proposed constitution

The proposed constitution comes after a committee determined the previous constitution allowed everything to be done internally, which didn’t include the rest of the student body in their decision making. The new constitution structures SGA in a similar way to the United States Government, with three branches: legislative, judicial and executive.

Joseph LeMire chosen as Elon University's next chief of campus safety and police

Joe LeMire will serve as Elon University’s chief of campus safety and police starting March 29. The university chose the former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee police chief after restarting the search process in the fall. The first search was conducted last spring, but was paused and ultimately stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Burlington baker uses generational skills at Black-owned business

Right next to the hustle and bustle of Route 49 in Burlington stands a gray brick house — separated from the road by a lawn — with a sign in the window that reads “life is sweet.” Inside, Alicia Wingate is living her childhood dream. Wingate learned how to bake from her mom and said she encourages aspiring Black and female business owners to take a leap and follow their dreams.

Elon men’s basketball defeats William & Mary in possible last regular season game

Elon’s defense clamped down on the Tribe, holding them to a 40.5% shooting percentage while causing 21 turnovers in the process. The Phoenix offense was proficient with its shooting, hitting on 48.3% of its field goals. Sturdy defense mixed with offensive efficiency led to multiple scoring drives all night that kept the Phoenix ahead of the Tribe for the entire game.

Elon senior turns art into business

Arielle Brochin began creating art in both her advanced high school art classes and in her free time. Eventually, she wanted to share this talent with others, so during COVID-19, she turned to Instagram to showcase her artwork. Brochin uses her platform to showcase the art she creates in both her free time and in her Elon art classes.

Elon Girl Scouts forge through pandemic

The last time Troop 13214 met in person together was March 5, 2020, two days after the first confirmed case of COVID-19 was identified in North Carolina. Troop leader Rosie DeMario knew she had to make other plans for her troop going forward, and in April 2020, they began meeting weekly on Zoom.

Under their wings: Students with autism find structure at 3 Bluebirds Farm during the pandemic

While exposure to the outside world has been limited during the COVID-19 pandemic, students with autism face a new set of challenges that have been exacerbated by fluctuating measures regarding hybrid instruction in the Wake County School System. Approximately one year after the onset of the pandemic, parents with students in special education programs still find themselves left behind by Wake County.

Old, new fans prepare for spring football season at Rhodes Stadium

Rhodes Stadium will be occupied for the first time in 15 months with limited fans in attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions. Some fans — like Elon alumnus Noble Marshall ‘70 — have been coming to games for decades, but for others, this will be their first game as a Phoenix.

Elon University expenses exceeded projections during fall semester

Elon University spent more money than anticipated during the fall semester due to pandemic related costs, according to Provost Aswani Volety. Representatives of the university did not say how much was planned for in the annual budget or how much more it spent than anticipated during the fall semester. Among the expenses were COVID-19 tests, cleaning supplies and the personal protection equipment required to open campus safely.

SGA Project Task Force discusses major changes to constitution

Elon University’s Student Government Association Project Task Force met virtually Thursday night about proposed changes to the SGA constitution that would significantly alter the structure of the organization. The new Constitution model more aligned with the United States government in the creation of three distinct branches: the legislative, executive and judicial branches.

Elon alumna converts school buses into mobile homes

Elon University alum Megan Donahue ‘20 and her mother, Lisa, cover Tobius’ metal sides with paint looking for any spots that need touch-ups. Tobius is the latest bus the mother-daughter duo is transforming into a home under the banner of their company Live Simply. The company began as a way to honor Megan’s brother, Michael, who died in 2015 after getting hit by a car.

Alamance NAACP spearheads effort to rename park after Black councilman slain in 1870

Almost 151 years ago on Feb. 26, 1870, members of the Ku Klux Klan kidnapped Wyatt Outlaw in the middle of the night, and his body was found the next morning hanging from an elm tree near the courthouse. 18 men were indicted for his death, but the charges were dropped. Now in 2021, the Alamance County NAACP is trying to memorialize Outlaw and the lynching that took place over a century ago.
