The Elon University men’s soccer team was hoping for a different result today than one year ago, when Hofstra defeated the Phoenix in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game, 3-2. This year’s championship match between the schools was hosted at Rudd Field rather than the Hofstra University Soccer Stadium, and Phoenix fans showed up in droves.

The Elon women’s basketball team played its second-straight Atlantic Coastal Conference opponent to begin the season on Thursday, losing to No. 10 North Carolina State 89-55. The team did not give up though, according to head coach Charlotte Smith, who said she was proud of her players’ effort these past two games.

Nicholas Barrett, 22, finished his coursework at Alamance County Community College in the High School Equivalency Program in August. The initiative is for adults to earn their GED diploma through ACCC, where he is one of 859 students enrolled this year.

After over three years of restoration and reconstruction, the carousel house in Burlington is nearing completion. The final steps of the construction process are underway this month as the city’s Recreation and Parks Department prepares for the holiday season, but one of the biggest milestones was recently completed — reinstalling all of the carousel’s animals.

As this year’s artistic director for Elon University’s all-Black cabaret, “The Moment,” senior Zion Middleton was inspired by his experience participating in the performance’s 2020 iteration, but he wanted to transform the annual production into something that can evolve with the changing needs of Elon’s Black community. This year’s “The Moment” is based on the theme of an oasis and safe space for Black artists to engage with their craft, creativity and community.

Checking the box labeled “African American” on her college applications was a proud moment for Uwera Izabayo – one where she was able to own her identity. She said she knew it would be a glaring part of the document, having a significant impact on the decision of the board. Now a sophomore at Elon, Izabayo considers herself lucky that she applied to colleges when she did.

In 2018, the North Carolina General Assembly changed its district and superior court elections from nonpartisan to partisan. This means that candidates running for judicial positions are required to run with their political affiliation on the ballot. According to Ballotpedia, Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas are the only states that hold partisan elections for both their supreme, intermediate appellate and general jurisdiction courts.

In preparation for the midterm elections, Elon Votes hosted a number of events to increase turnout for early voting, which ran in North Carolina from Oct. 20 to Nov. 5. Its primary focus was to help students obtain their absentee forms and raise awareness for voting opportunities on campus, according to Elon Votes coordinators Sydney Barlow and Bo Dalrymple.
