It’s been nine months since Elon men’s basketball has played. Tonight the winding road to the 2020-21 season was capped by a 82-52 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College. But the season-opening victory was about more than basketball.

Normally, around this time of year, the Elon University men’s cross country team would be past the Colonial Athletic Association Championships and would be preparing for the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. COVID-19 had other plans, however.

Bridget Kanaley and Kelley McCarten, seniors on Elon University women’s cross country team, had the news broken to them in the summer that their season would be delayed. Although tough to accept, Kanaley and McCarten put in perspective that there were bigger issues regarding the COVID-19 pandemic than their season getting delayed.

Disappointment surged through the women’s basketball team last year as they were warming up for their quarterfinal game in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship against James Madison University. The announcement was made over the loudspeakers that the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The 2019 campaign for the Elon women’s soccer team was a historic one. Making it to the second round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship tournament for the first time in program history capped off the team’s best season in the conference to date.

Tristen Cox, a senior defensive lineman, had high expectations for his final season with the Elon Phoenix on the football field. Although the Colonial Athletic Association announced it was suspending fall sports due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Phoenix still planned on having a season in the autumn independent of the CAA. But, shortly after the decision was made, Elon Athletics opted to suspend all fall sports as well.

Senior Kodi Garcia wakes up, showers, goes to class, meets with her adviser, heads to the gym for treatment, goes to practice, lifts, showers again and then goes to tutoring. If she has time, she then hangs out with her friends. This is another day not only in the life of a college student but as a senior on the volleyball team.

Burlington Athletic Stadium has not hosted a baseball game since September of 2019. The stadium’s occupants, the Burlington Royals, saw their 2020 season wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic.

Cheering extends beyond the sidelines of Elon University football and basketball games and into other facets of life for senior Zach Wallace. He started cheerleading in 2011 while he was in middle school and became enamored with the sport.

Despite Elon University providing recommendations to keep club sports on campus safe, one sport — club fencing — decided to suspend their operations right away. Will Holzman, senior and club fencing president, cited multiple reasons for why the club thought it was best to not hold a season.

The recruiting process is a difficult road for all college football prospects in a normal year. Choosing a college — a place to learn, grow and train — for the college football athlete is a very difficult process. Enter COVID-19, the virus that has impacted people all over the globe, and turned the college football recruiting process upside down.

In Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley’s email informing the student body that Elon University would be rising to Level 2, Dooley said that there was an outbreak of the coronavirus among student-athletes. Dooley went further to pinpoint the sports with clusters: football, lacrosse and baseball. The wording of his emails, to two athletes, gives athletics the brunt of the blame for going to level two, something they say is unfair.

Two additional coronavirus clusters have been reported among Elon University student-athletes, bringing the total to three, according to an email to students from Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley. Baseball, lacrosse and football all have clusters among their teams.

At every game, tailgate and sporting event, you see it. The personality and face of Elon University doing cartwheels down the fields, cheering on fans and making every person around it go wild. Even now, The Phoenix is part of Elon University culture — although it may not be able to do cartwheels on a Zoom call.

As Elon football sets its sights on a spring season after the coronavirus pandemic squashed a traditional fall campaign, head coach Tony Trisciani said that he is impressed by the leadership his veterans have displayed while preparing for the spring season.

Chuck Hannah was just a high schooler when he started to become aware of what “code-switching” was. Growing up in suburban areas, the now-Elon University junior and men’s basketball player found himself changing his appearance and actions to fit in with his peers.
