Two additional coronavirus clusters have been reported among Elon University student-athletes, bringing the total to three, according to an email to students from Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley. Baseball, lacrosse and football all have clusters among their teams.

The third cluster comes a day after all sports activity had been suspended due to cases among athletes.

Since Monday, a total of 43 athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 and an additional 12 are symptomatic. On Thursday, 21 student-athletes tested positive and 18 were symptomatic.

The university also reported 32 new cases in the past 24 hours bringing the total number of active cases to 73. 215 students are now in isolation which is a 77 student increase.

The clusters among student-athletes have moved the university to the moderate, or level 2, alert level. As of now, the only changes with this increased level are the suspension of sports practices and targeted testing to specific teams and athletics staff members.
