Elon escapes Penn State in opening day victory

Up by 10 heading into the eighth inning it looked like the Elon baseball team would coast to victory in its season opener against Penn State Friday evening, but it came down to the last pitch, as the Nittany Lions scored nine runs over the final two innings and the Phoenix escaped Latham Park with a 16-15 win. "It was a win no matter how it looks," Elon first baseman Casey Jones said.

Elon chapter of Pi Kappa Phi currently under investigation for alleged hazing

Elon University's chapter of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity is currently under investigation for alleged hazing in its new member education program, according to a statement by Vice President for Student Life Smith Jackson. All Pi Kappa Phi activities and operations — including any formal or informal new member meetings, activities such as brotherhood events, chapter meetings, intramurals or philanthropy on or off campus — have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. “The university takes these allegations seriously,” Jackson said.

A last second surge from the Elon Women's Basketball was not enough as the Phoenix fell to UNCW 86-82 on Thursday night. Elon trailed for much of the game, but was able to pull it within striking distance with moments to go.

An increasing student body and recent plans for the construction of multiple buildings in the last few years all point to Elon University’s growth, evidence Elon is attempting to become a more diverse campus nationally, internationally and culturally. Currently, students from every state except for North Dakota are represented in the student body.

NC underage drinking campaign comes to Alamance County

UPDATED: 1:52 p.m. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.  In an effort to curb a drinking culture in which the average North Carolina child takes their first sip of alcohol just before their 14th birthday, the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (ABC) has launched a new statewide initiative to raise awareness of the extent of the problem. It was immediately unclear what effect the campaign might have on colleges campuses — particularly at Elon University. "Talk It Out," a joint venture supported locally by Alamance Citizens for a Drug Free Community and the Burlington Police Department, has a two-fold mission of education and prevention.

I recently returned from a semester abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark and was able to sit down with one of the country's most famous singers. Thousands of teenage girls lined up eagerly for hours in the harsh Denmark cold, a giant line snaking around the concert venue "Vega" in Copenhagen.

Elon SGA 'Acorn Fund' to support student entrepreneurs

The Student Government Association (SGA) recently announced the launch of a $200,000 initiative to further student innovation outside of the classroom. The new endowed program, dubbed the “Acorn Fund,” is said to support projects that have a positive impact in the community — both nonprofit and for-profit business models are eligible.

Elon losing streak reaches five games as Phoenix fall in Williamsburg

A long two week stretch of losing continued for the Elon Men's Basketball team as the Phoenix fell for the fifth consecutive game, 58-77 on the road Wednesday night against William and Mary. Elon (11-15, 3-10) has dropped nine of its last ten games and sits only above College of Charleston in the CAA standings. William & Mary (16-8, 10-3) got out in front early, scoring 42 points in the first half.
