The two teams were tied at 68 points after regulation, but four points from Shay Burnett and two Zora Stephenson three-pointers put the Phoenix in the lead.

But it was not meant to be as Phoenix guard Austin Hamilton's shot caught only air as the buzzer sounded and James Madison hung on to score a 75-72 win at JMU Convocation Center on Saturday night. In the seconds before the final shot, Elon was helped by a heady play by freshman Dmitri Thompson, who saw an opportunity to steal the ball instead of foul, snatching it away, quickly calling a timeout and giving the Phoenix one final possession with 8.2 seconds to go. The original play coming out of the timeout was called for sharpshooting guard Tanner Samson with freshman Elijah Bryant as the second option, but both were covered leaving the final chance to Hamilton. It was as much of the night had gone for the Phoenix, as James Madison played a zone defense that stymied Elon throughout the contest.
Poor shooting haunted the Elon Women's Basketball Team once again, as the league-leading James Madison Dukes overcame a second half run from the Phoenix to leave Alumni Gym with a 68-51 win on Thursday night. The Dukes currently sit atop the Colonial Athletic Association at 5-0 in conference play, while the Phoenix drop to 3-2 in CAA games. Elon's leading scorer, and only player to reach double digits was Shay Burnett with 10.

Many walk-on athletes, who are on the roster but do not receive athletic scholarships, say they find their motivation by simply loving the game. "I get a high sense of fulfillment from playing," said Sam Hershberger, a junior on the men's basketball team. Hershberger was in contact with Elon coaches before enrolling in the university, but he said they were upfront in explaining he would be a walk-on athlete.
Following Elon's 24-17 loss to Maine on Saturday evening, Phoenix seniors hung around on the field for a few extra moments as they left Rhode's Stadium for the final time. "We've shared a lot of disappointment and some success together," Elon senior linebacker Jonathan Spain said of his fellow seniors.
