North Carolina declares state of emergency in response to coronavirus

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency in response to five new cases of COVID-19 — also known as the novel coronavirus — bringing the total number of presumed positive cases to seven. The state cannot confirm these cases as positive until they are confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Elon School of Communications hosts panel on media and the culture of shame

Four panelists sat down with Elon students to discuss the controversial aspects of media culture as well as media law and ethics. The four speakers were: Frank LoMonte, director of the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information at the University of Florida, Deborah Dwyer, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill doctoral student, Ryan Tuck, a media consultant and Christal Carmichael, a psychology instructor at North Carolina Central University.

Elon SGA elects new representatives for 2020

Miley won the election over junior Brandon Veal by 25 votes. According to SGA, 2,250 students voted, and Miley won by a 1.1% margin. Student participation in the election dropped by about 17% from last year, when 2,705 students voted.

LIVE BLOG: Alamance County tax referendum results

The Alamance county primary ballot includes a referendum on whether or not to increase the county sales tax from 6.75% to 7%.  If passed, items in the county like groceries and gas would not be affected by the sales tax, but people who spend money at retail shops and food places would bear the tax.

Alamance county voters will vote this Super Tuesday on who will run for the three open seats for County Commissioner. With 12 candidates total, five being Democrat and seven being Republican, only three candidates from each party will be able to move on to the general election.

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
