The Painter’s Roost allows guests to paint, socialize in eclectic atmosphere

Anita O’Donnell spends her days in a quaint, light-filled space surrounded by uniquely refurbished furniture and a paint-splattered floor. O’Donnell, owner of The Painter’s Roost which was recently established on Huffman Mill Road, offers people of any age or skill level the opportunity to improve one’s painting abilities. Upon walking into the store, one is overcome by the homeyness that characterizes the painting studio — the bright color palette of the interior and the studio’s eclectic rooster decor immediately transports customers to an old country farmhouse. For $25-$45 per person, each customer is supplied with necessary materials such as brushes, a canvas, an easel and paint to complete their own masterpiece.

Students React to Offensive Posters Around Campus

During one of Elon's busiest weekends, fellows weekend, students are usually handed out packets of information about our school. This time, they also found flyers on the windshields of their cars. The flyers were in response to the racial slur note that was posted around campus earlier this week. Elon Local News got student reactions to that offensive content. "It's kind of sickening," says sophomore Brian Binder.

NC Supreme Court votes 3-3 in Ochsner case

The North Carolina Supreme Court voted 3-3 this month on a North Carolina Court of Appeals ruling that North Carolina Public Records Law is not applicable to state-commissioned police departments of private universities within the state.

Elon's senior dance thesis class embraces ‘sonder’

The word “sonder” is uncommon. It is defined as the realization that every person has the same amount of complexity and vibrancy as everybody else. Sonder was the word chosen as the title of the Class of 2013’s senior thesis dance, which premiered in the Black Box Theatre last weekend.

Sexual assault victims should not be silenced

According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, 54 percent of sexual assaults are not reported to the police and 97 percent of rapists never spend a day in jail. Landen Gambill, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, faces possible expulsion due to an Honor Code violation for “disruptive or intimidating behavior” toward her alleged rapist.

New Jewish Fraternity

Elliot Aks, Garrett Mann, Ben Karas, Zach Csillag, and Mason Sklut all had a vision. The five Elon students wanted to bring a jewish fraternity to our campus, and a year later the founding fathers of Zeta Beta Tau the world's first Jewish Fraternity, were initiated. "There's something to be said about having a Jewish Fraternity, the culture, the history, the traditions, there's nothing like it," said Mason Sklut. Each of its founding fathers believe the fraternity will be a good outlet for all Jewish men at Elon. "For me it's not so much about religion, as it is community and culture," said Garret Mann. [div class="alignleft"] [/div] ZBT plans to get involved right away. "In the coming year I plan to build a strong brotherhood within the group, and also work with the other Greek organizations at Elon, as well as the Elon community," said Zach Csillag, President of Zeta Beta Tau. Although the five core members are Jewish, ZBT is not a religiously exclusive Fraternity. "As of now we have 33 founding fathers of our organization," said Elliot Aks.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
