You hand your ID to the bank teller and deposit your paycheck but for Drucila Perez, this simple transaction stirred up enough fear to bring her to tears. "I showed my expired my driver's license and the teller told me 'Why are you driving with an expired driver's license?' so I just put my head down and started to cry," she said. In July of 2011, incoming Elon freshman Lauren Dunne Astley was killed by her boyfriend in an act of domestic violence just weeks before beginning her time at Elon. Now, almost five years after the tragedy, the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund, a nonprofit founded by Astley's parents, will support the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture Series at campus in the upcoming months. The lecture series is being coordinated by faculty in Elon's Women's, Gender, and Sexualities Studies program which has partnered with the Office of the Provost, the School of Communications, and the Gender and LGBTQIA Center. The series will begin Winter Term and will last through Spring Semester with multiple lectures that will be free and open to the public. The first lecture will take place on January 11 in the Lakeside Meeting Rooms at 5 p.m.

In the email, sent Sunday afternoon to the class of 2016, Fuller said the university has learned of Katerina Diaz's death. Diaz spent a year at Elon before transferring because of medical issues, according to the email. There will be a Gathering of Friends at 7 p.m.

The Elon University men’s basketball team rode the coattails of a 10-0 run by junior guard/forward Christian Hairston out of the final media timeout to defeat Florida International University 77-71 Friday night in Miami. Before Elon University students broke for Thanksgiving, they received an email from President Leo Lambert condemning several reports of homophobic slurs directed at members of the community. “It is understandable that this type of incident makes members of the LGBTQIA communities feel unsafe and unwelcome,” Lambert wrote in the email, “despite the good work of hundreds of people to support and value Elon’s LGBTQIA students and colleagues.” According to Leigh-Anne Royster, director of inclusive community well-being at Elon, the slurs Lambert referred to were directed at Elon students, and authorities have not been able to identify all perpetrators. All reported incidents were investigated by the police when possible and responded to through the Student Life Emergency Response system and/or the ongoing Bias and Harassment Response system.
