As students endure the dark and chilly times of winter, the availability of fresh, warm food is a comforting inspiration. But for Elon University students staying on campus during Fake Break, they will not be able to rely on access to endless, prepaid meals.

For students living near the Moseley Center, there will be less of a trek to find food since Lakeside Dining Hall will be open most days. The Winter Garden Cafe, which features Topio’s, Biscuitville and Freshii, will be open every day. Students closer to the Historic Neighborhood will be able to enjoy Acorn from Thursday to Monday.

Although meal swipes cannot be used during Fake Break, spring meal plans will begin Sunday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m.

Meal Dollars, Food Dollars, Phoenix Cash and credit cards can be used at all dining locations throughout the break. But it may come at a high cost — the price of a lunch or dinner at Lakeside dining hall is $11.35 per meal.

Girls participating in recruitment will not have to worry about this cost and lack of meal plan since they will receive paper certificates for lunch and dinner at Lakeside Dining Hall during the weekdays of recruitment.

Freshman Rebecca Fliegel, who is rushing, said she didn't understand the need for most of the dining locations to close and for meal plans to be put on hold.

“Because there’s such a large population of students still here, I think it’s unfair for them to stop meal plans,” Fliegel said.

Upperclassmen who don’t rely as heavily on meal plans said dining options available during Fake Break would not be much of an issue.

Because junior Molly Sweeney has a block meal plan, she said the closings won't have much of an impact on her food access.

“I have a kitchen, so it is easy for me to make food and not worry about needing to rely on campus food,” Sweeney said.

Normal dining hours are expected to resume Tuesday, Feb. 2. Menus and hours are available here.
