Elon wins Homecoming thriller against Towson

Before Towson lined up for a 33-yard field goal in double overtime, Elon fans chanted, “Block that kick.”  A score for the Tigers would have given them the advantage in the extra period, placing enormous pressure on the Phoenix to score again or lose the game.  But defensive end Dre Howell heard the chants. And then he delivered. 

Elon freshman DJ prepares to open for homecoming concert

Singer-songwriter Jon Bellion will be here in concert at Elon this weekend as a culmination of homecoming celebrations. As part of the concert, Student Union Board found a student here on campus to open for the concert to tie the Elon community even further into the concert.  SUB Concert Committee Director, Colton Cadarette said Ben Warters was the perfect candidate for the event because of his determination.

Elon University brings the musical to the McCrary Theatre stage this year — the year it returns to Broadway — in a larger-than-life show emphasized by outbursts of mad giggles, blundering gentlemen and grandiose verbosity. The show's stars are portrayed by musical theater students who use their own experiences and strengths to give "Hello, Dolly!" its timeless, giddy essence.

Phoenix basketball teams look to start seasons off right

Entering the final year in Alumni Gym, both the Elon University men and women's basketball teams look to be competitive in the Colonial Athletic Association. The men have a 31-game slate, not including the preseason exhibition game on Nov. 1 against Randolph College. The women will have a 29-game list, adding an additional preseason exhibition game against Anderson University on Nov. 5. Head coaches Matt Matheny and Charlotte Smith enter their ninth and seventh years at the helm, respectively, and provided their thoughts on the Phoenix teams and what they hope to accomplish this season.

New alumni network brings Latinx and Hispanic community members together

Homecoming Weekend brings hundreds of alumni back to Elon University to visit the campus they once called home. This year, a new alumni group is making their debut: the Elon Latinx Hispanic Alumni Network (ELHAN).  The creation of an alumni network for Latinx- and Hispanic-identified students has been in the works for several years, but considering the growth of the Latinx/Hispanic population at Elon over the last several years, many saw now as the perfect time to create a formal group.

The Elon community gathered in Numen Lumen Pavilion Sunday night to mourn the death of Breslin Wiley, the 21-year-old junior who died unexpectedly Saturday. Every seat in the Sacred Space was filled. People had to line the walls and doorways to make room.

The Spanish region of Catalonia has been embroiled in political turmoil for months in the midst of a growing separatist movement. On Friday, that turmoil came to head when Catalan lawmakers voted to declare independence. The Spanish government dismissed the region’s president and dissolved its parliament.

Paul Parsons to step down as dean of School of Communications

Paul Parsons, dean of Elon University's School of Communications for 17 years, will step down at the end of this academic year, according to an email sent from Provost Steven House to faculty and staff.

Football collects seventh-straight win at Villanova

The Elon University football team collected its seventh win of the season and its fourth over a ranked opponent on Saturday, beating No. 13 Villanova University 19-14.

Elon junior dies 'unexpectedly' Saturday

Elon University junior Breslin Thomas Wiley, 21, died Saturday morning. He was found at his off-campus home in the Town of Elon.  Town of Elon Police were called to Wiley's home at 216 E Foster Drive, shortly after noon. An investigation is currently being conducted to determine the cause of death.
