Common reading provides common bond

The Common Reading program at Elon University has come a long way since its inception in 1992.  Starting with the simple goal of nurturing a richer intellectual community, the program has become much more than students’ first official college reading assignment. College is a major transition for freshmen.

Students work to improve intellectual climate

Throughout their college careers, Elon University students Greg Honan and Cara McClain often discussed the “lacking” intellectual climate on campus. It wasn’t until last spring, however, that the two decided to take action and shape the intellectual climate themselves. Now seniors, Honan and McClain have spent the last year speaking with teachers, working with the Student Government Association (SGA) and surveying Elon students to figure out where Elon’s intellectual climate currently stands and how to improve it. What is “intellectual climate?” SGA defines “intellectual climate” as “the combination of your academic and your social life,” according to Sarah Paille-Jansa, President of the Class of 2015. But Tom Mould, director of the Honors Fellows program, Elon professor and member of Elon’s intellectual climate working group, defined it more broadly. “Intellectual climate to me is the life of the mind,” he said.

Elon men’s golf struggles at SoCon Tournament

Coming off of a second-place finish and individual win at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational, the Elon University men’s golf team fell flat with a ninth place finish out of ten teams at the Southern Conference Tournament in Pinehurst, N.C.

The Pendulum Editorial Board would like to clarify its stance from the editorial “Lasting effects: sexual assault on college campuses” from April 8th. Our editorial was meant to initiate a dialogue about sexual assault survivors, the programs that are in place at Elon to support survivors, and how Elon could further prevent sexual assaults.

Review: Percussion Ensemble performs spring concert

Sixteen different drums played by four of the five members of Elon’s Percussion Ensemble opened the group’s spring concert last Wednesday with a loud roar and a tight groove. The tribal drumming pulled in a few extra patrons who were walking by the open doors of Yeager Recital Hall as the concert began.

Elon takes two of three from Appalachian State

The Elon University baseball team saw some mixed results both on the mound and at the plate in a three-game series with Appalachian State University that saw the Phoenix win two games out of three. Elon rode an eighth inning home run by senior second baseman Sebastian Gomez to a 6-2 win in the first game, before a rough day on the mound for the Phoenix allowed Appalachian State to take the second 10-4, but Elon won the final game 4-2 behind a stellar outing by junior pitcher Jake Stalzer. Elon 6, Appalachian State 2 Gomez stepped to the plate with no outs in the eighth inning and runners at second and third.

Elon women's tennis advances to first NCAA Tournament

After narrowly falling 4-3 in last year’s championship match of the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship, the Elon University women’s tennis team topped second-seeded Samford University, 4-2, in this year’s edition to clinch its first SoCon title in program history April 19 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. “The championship match is a little bit different than any other match.

Clean sweep: Elon men's tennis wins SoCon Tournament

The Elon University men’s tennis team is the Southern Conference Tournament champion after defeating Furman University 4-1 on Saturday, April 19. “This team has fought hard all year and worked hard, I’m proud of them,” Elon head coach Michael Leonard said. Elon women's lacrosse stays unbeaten in A-Sun

The Elon University women’s lacrosse team continued its unbeaten streak in Atlantic Sun Conference play with a 19-7 win over Howard University April 19 in Greene Stadium. The Phoenix is now 3-0 in the A-Sun and improves to a 7-7 record overall.

Europeans prepare for Eurovision Song Competition

The United States has many reality singing competitions, The Voice, American Idol and the X-Factor are all extremely popular, but none of these shows are as popular as the Eurovision Song Competition in Europe. Held once a year at the beginning of May, over 170 million people tune in to watch their country compete in the live show. When Elon junior Maggie Macdonald attended boarding school in Scotland, she was introduced to the phenomenon and since then has been a huge fan of the competition. “It gets very intense during Eurovision,” Macdonald said.

Phoenix softball drops set to Pirates

The Elon University softball team dropped the first two games of a three game nonconference set with East Carolina University 4-2 and 6-0 at the ECU Softball Field in Greenville, NC. In the first game, the Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an infield single up the third base line from catcher Abby Wynne. The Phoenix responded in the top of the third on a home run to straightaway center from freshman catcher Carey Million to knot the game at 1-1. But the Pirates retook the lead, this time for good, in the bottom of the third.

Women's tennis battles, earns spot in SoCon Final

For the second consecutive year, the Elon University women’s tennis team is headed to the championship match of the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship.  The Phoenix clinched a spot in the final with an impressive 4-3 win over top-seeded and nationally ranked Furman University April 18 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. With the match tied 3-3, the fate of the season rested in the hands of Elon junior Barbora Lazarova.
