Elon sends seniors out with a bang in rout of UNCW

In the waning moments of the Elon University men's basketball team's 74-55 rout of UNC Wilmington on Saturday night, coach Matt Matheny was able to take seniors Austin Hamilton and Kevin Blake out of the game, to thunderous applause and gave them each a hug of appreciation (in addition to injured forward Ryan Winters). "That's how you want it to be," Matheny said.

Enter Climaxed Fitness; a start-up company formed by Elon juniors Corey Mitchell, Tracey Coppedge, John Silas and Zach Dupree. Elon University is working with Campus Kitchens across the country to “Raise the Dough,” a weeklong national competition to raise money for educational efforts and food contributions. Elon’s chapter’s goal is to raise $1,800 by Feb.

Elon makes strides in sparking discussions about mental health

During his visit to Elon, Ross Szabo, CEO of the Human Power Project and co-author of “Behind Happy Faces: Taking Charge of your Mental Health,” urged a crowd of Elon University community members to move past the social stigma against mental health and recognize the importance of seeking help for themselves and peers. “Mental health isn’t a problem,” he said.

Phoenix down Northeastern, earn first back-to-back conference wins

The Elon University men’s basketball team defeated Northeastern University on Thursday, 72-65. The win marks the Phoenix’s second consecutive victory and its first back-to-back wins in conference play. Elon and Northeastern traded the lead throughout the first half, with the Phoenix leading by as many as 11 point with 7:59 to play.

Elon takes down Northeastern for second consecutive win

"Pound the rock." That's been the message that Elon University basketball coach Matt Matheny has been telling his team all year. And after snapping a seven-game losing streak on Saturday against Delaware, the Phoenix continued to chip away at that rock with a 72-65 win over preseason Colonial Athletic Association favorite Northeastern. "You come to Alumni Gym you're going to play a team that's going to fight for 40 minutes," Elon forward Christian Hairston said, "We're not where we want to be in the standings, but we just keep fighting.

Elon housing divides students by class

The 2015 Housing Selection process, which begins Feb. 25 and continues until March 11, will direct students to certain neighborhoods by class, unless they apply for a Living and Learning Community (LLC). According to MarQuita Barker, associate director of residence life for operations and information management, sophomores can expect to find their future homes in Danieley flats and apartments.

Phoenix bats erupt in early innings to defeat UNCG

The Elon University Phoenix baseball team defeated the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans 7-2 on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Latham Park. Starting at the mound for the Phoenix was sophomore RHP Matt Harris who pitched six innings, giving up only two runs while matching his career-high in strikeouts with eight. “Me and coach [Kennedy] were pretty much on the same page with the pitch count all game long,” Harris said.

Chi Upsilon Sigma promotes inclusivity, women empowerment

The road to bring a new sorority to campus is a long one. After a push from students, Chi Upsilon Sigma, Elon University’s only Latina sorority, has emerged. While 38 percent of female undergraduates are involved in a Greek organization, some women felt that they did not belong in any of the nine pre-existing sororities that make up Elon ’s Panhellenic Council (PHC). The start of a Latina sorority was just a thought for students and is now the introduction of Chi Upsilon Sigma is being celebrated.
