As a one-bid league, the Southern Conference is an afterthought in the grand scheme of March Madness. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments feature a single Southern Conference team, the conference tournament champions. For the men, the 15th-seeded Wofford College Terriers used a late-season surge and run through the SoCon tournament to claim the NCAA bid.

Spring dance concert provides array of performances

The Elon Dance Company held its annual spring dance concert titled “Looking Back to Spring Forward.” The concert was held in McCrary Theatre and featured a collection of six contemporary and modern pieces choreographed by dance faculty members and guest choreographers. The performance’s first piece was “luminitza,” a contemporary ballet work choreographed by Elon assistant professor of dance Jen Guy Metcalf. The entire stage was completely dark with the exception of the back of the stage, which was lit by lamps.

Dual-degree student struggles to say goodbye

Elon University sophomore Aubrey Crawley has a schedule she adheres to each week. Mondays are spent working at the Allied Churches food pantry with her boyfriend, Matt Lee. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Crawley and Lee go to Poverty and Social Justice class together, then Crawley heads back to Allied Churches to put in more hours at the food pantry. On Thursday nights, Crawley grabs dinner with her roommate, then meets with her InterVarsity Christian Fellowship small group. For someone who has become so settled here, Crawley said it’s hard to believe that in just two months, she will be leaving Elon for good. Crawley is a member of Elon’s International Business dual-degree program, which means she, along with three other Elon students, will spend the next two years at Reutlingen University in Germany. There, she will get the opportunity to explore the European business sector while experiencing a different culture — something she said enticed her when she was first applying to colleges. “It just seemed like a great opportunity everyone would take advantage of,” she said. Crawley said she knew in high school she was interested in pursuing international business.

Lazarova earns SoCon Player of the Week honors

Elon University junior women’s tennis player Barbora Lazarova was named Southern Conference Player of the Week March 18 for matches played March 10-16.  Lazarova won three singles matches during this stretch and has won eight straight singles matches overall. Lazarova’s week began with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Gardner-Webb University’s Jenny Lunde March 11.

Iowa products carrying Elon baseball

Of everything that has helped the Elon University baseball team to a 13-7 start, the Hawkeye State must be the most beneficial. Two junior college transfers from the state of Iowa, juniors Lucas Bakker and Jake Stalzer, have combined for six wins and have now won the last four Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.

NCAA Tournament: Jordan Spritzer's bracket

I find that every year the brackets become harder and harder to predict.  I find this year to be particularly difficult because many of the teams I like have been drawn against each other while the teams I don’t like seem to have easier paths to Dallas. The first of the teams I don’t like is Kansas.  Obviously, Kansas will miss Joel Embiid, but the Jayhawks should cruise through the opening weekend of the tournament.  I’ve picked New Mexico to take on Kansas in the round of 32, but the Lobos don’t have a quality win that gives me any belief they can pull off the upset.  New Mexico lost to Kansas by 17 points already this year on a neutral court, and the Lobos have also lost to fellow tournament teams UMass, New Mexico State and San Diego State.  Kansas should make it to the regional finals after beating Syracuse, who is in a similar situation. Syracuse’s best basketball is behind it but I think the Orange can squeak by Western Michigan and Ohio State.  Syracuse’s 2-3 zone will do enough to disrupt a poor shooting Buckeyes team, but will lose to Kansas in the elite 8.  Top-seeded Florida will have difficult matchups at the top of the bracket, but Pittsburgh and UCLA are just too inconsistent to have an extended March run.  There’s something to be said about Florida’s long winning streak and guard play is always important in March.  Scottie Wilbekin has been phenomenal for the Gators thus far and will lead them to another Final Four. In the East, I like Michigan State to advance to the Final Four, defeating Iowa State in the regional final.  St.

Whether or not it was ready, Rudd Field played host to some intriguing preseason matchups for the Elon University men’s soccer team this past Saturday, March 15. The Southern Conference champions rolled out to face the Wilmington Hammerheads and the Raleigh Amateurs squad.

Millennials detached from politics, religion, study finds

Millennials, the term coined for the emerging youth generation between the ages of 18-33 in 2014, are detached from political parties and organized religion, according to the results from a Pew Research Center study. The study, released March 7, also found Millennials are more connected to social networks and other technologies than past generations. The study was based on a survey of 1,821 adults, including 617 Millennials, and was conducted in Febuary.

Elon University physics major explores connection between quantum, classical physics in SURF project

Junior Muhammad Awal Tahiru’s project for this year’s Student Undergraduate Research Forum is focusing on how small-scale things move and how to bridge together quantum physics and classical physics. Classical physics deals with the predictable behavior of human-scale objects; whereas, quantum physics deals with probabilities of the smaller, atomic world of particles. These two types don’t always fit together, according to chair of the department of physics and astronomy Martin Kamela, who served as Tahiru’s research mentor.

Belk Library to add neuroinclusive spaces guided by student research

Over the summer of 2026, Elon’s Carole Grotnes Belk Library will create two new neuroinclusive spaces to better support diverse learning needs, building on the success of two classrooms in Lindner Hall that have been in use throughout the school year.These spaces are a result of research conducted by students: senior Kira Campagna, junior Benjamin Krasnow, and junior Kaz Kelly, who are studying what makes a classroom accessible and effective for all learners.
