Elon University junior women’s tennis player Barbora Lazarova was named Southern Conference Player of the Week March 18 for matches played March 10-16.  Lazarova won three singles matches during this stretch and has won eight straight singles matches overall.

Lazarova’s week began with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Gardner-Webb University’s Jenny Lunde March 11. She followed this performance with wins against opponents from Davidson College and Wake Forest University March 15 and 16.  Her win over the Demon Deacons’ Samantha Asch earned Elon its only point in the 6-1 loss.

The eight-match singles winning streak that Lazarova is currently riding dates back to Jan. 25, when she defeated Palma Juhasz of Kansas State University, 6-3, 6-3, in a 4-3 Elon loss.

Lazarova has shown tremendous versatility this season, playing at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.  She is primarily the team’s No. 3 player behind seniors Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker, but has stepped in when needed to at No. 2 singles, and has delivered.  Lazarova’s singles record currently stands at 9-2, her last loss coming Jan. 24 against the University of Georgia.

On the doubles court, Lazarova and Johnston, her partner as of Feb. 22, hold a record of 4-1, with their only loss coming in a tiebreaker to Wake Forest.  Lazarova and Johnston battled Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner of the Demon Deacons to a 7-7 tie, sending the match to a tiebreaker.  But the pair went on to lose the tiebreaker and the match, their first loss at No. 1 doubles on the season.

Lazarova is the first player on the team to receive the SoCon Player of the Week honor this season.
