Town of Elon leaders compete for seats on the Board of Alderman

Many major decisions are made through the Town of Elon’s Board of Alderman, which is currently going through the election process to find new representatives for the board.

Residents of Burlington will cast their final votes for city mayor Nov. 7. Current Mayor Ian Baltutis and current Mayor Pro-Tempore Celo Faucette are the two names on the ballot.

Phoenix basketball teams look to start seasons off right

Entering the final year in Alumni Gym, both the Elon University men and women's basketball teams look to be competitive in the Colonial Athletic Association. The men have a 31-game slate, not including the preseason exhibition game on Nov. 1 against Randolph College. The women will have a 29-game list, adding an additional preseason exhibition game against Anderson University on Nov. 5. Head coaches Matt Matheny and Charlotte Smith enter their ninth and seventh years at the helm, respectively, and provided their thoughts on the Phoenix teams and what they hope to accomplish this season.

New alumni network brings Latinx and Hispanic community members together

Homecoming Weekend brings hundreds of alumni back to Elon University to visit the campus they once called home. This year, a new alumni group is making their debut: the Elon Latinx Hispanic Alumni Network (ELHAN).  The creation of an alumni network for Latinx- and Hispanic-identified students has been in the works for several years, but considering the growth of the Latinx/Hispanic population at Elon over the last several years, many saw now as the perfect time to create a formal group.

The Elon community gathered in Numen Lumen Pavilion Sunday night to mourn the death of Breslin Wiley, the 21-year-old junior who died unexpectedly Saturday. Every seat in the Sacred Space was filled. People had to line the walls and doorways to make room.

On Friday, that turmoil came to head when Catalan lawmakers voted to declare independence. The Spanish government dismissed the region’s president and dissolved its parliament.

Paul Parsons to step down as dean of School of Communications

Paul Parsons, dean of Elon University's School of Communications for 17 years, will step down at the end of this academic year, according to an email sent from Provost Steven House to faculty and staff.

The Elon University football team collected its seventh win of the season and its fourth over a ranked opponent on Saturday, beating No. 13 Villanova University 19-14.

Elon junior dies 'unexpectedly' Saturday

Elon University junior Breslin Thomas Wiley, 21, died Saturday morning. He was found at his off-campus home in the Town of Elon.  Town of Elon Police were called to Wiley's home at 216 E Foster Drive, shortly after noon. An investigation is currently being conducted to determine the cause of death.

Elon University's fall musical is bringing a classic Broadway hit to the college stage: Hello Dolly!  Audiences will not see the two months of rehearsals, learning music and choreographing every second of the show, in a two minute group number. Instead they'll hear the harmonies of the ensemble, the stomping to the beat of the chorus, and Dolly herself leading a parade.

Before arriving at college, I couldn’t even entertain the thought of reading for pleasure. Throughout my years of schooling, reading was always assigned, and it felt like an absolute chore to learn about seemingly negligible topics--like astrophysics, for example. To add to the agony, I was usually required to craft some variation of a templated, soulless essay about what I learned.

EDITORIAL: Other people’s cultures should not be worn as costumes

For many students at Elon University, Halloween is an exciting and fun holiday where students can dress up in costumes with their friends. Too often though, students and people across the world take this innocent holiday as an opportunity to use other people's cultures as costumes or otherwise be insensitive — even if they do not mean to. Some costumes may not even seem inappropriate at first, but when looked at critically, clearly have racist, homophobic, transphobic or sexist implications. 

TOROSSIAN: Attend campus events to learn different perspectives

Last semester my friend Morgan Bodenarain, executive president of SGA, invited me to the N-Word Forum, an event organized by the Black Student Union. Before she asked me to go, I had seen posters promoting the event around campus and, to be honest, I had no interest in attending. But Bodenarain insisted I attend with her. The second we walked into the room, I noticed that I was in the minority.
