Dr. Smith Jackson Addresses Recent Hate Language

Following our report of hate language being found on a whiteboard in Colonnades D, some students and faculty questioned why Vice President of Student Life, Dr. Smith Jackson, didn't email everyone to notify the campus of the incident.

Colonnades Dining Hall Receives Multiple Health Violations

North Carolina Public Health Inspectors gave Colonnades Dining Hall a health inspection score of 82 on Tuesday, September 17. The 1889 Grill Room was included as a part of Colonnades Dining Hall in the inspection report. Last March, Colonnades Dining Hall received a health inspection score of 96. According to the health inspection report, heavy mold buildup was inside an ice machine and a few dishes stored were found dirty. The inspector also wrote that a Colonnades Dining Hall employee dropped a knife on the floor, picked the knife up and continued food handling duties without washing their hands.

UEFA Champions League back in full swing

The 2013-2014 European season is back and in full swing. This week, the UEFA Champions League will kick off the group stages with 16 mouth-watering matches with the best 32 teams in Europe having been divided into eight groups of four in what will surely be an exciting competition. Last year, the tournament was a roller-coaster of unpredictability starting with defending champions Chelsea failing to make it out of the group stages.

Elon battles spider problem

Whether you're a student living on or off-campus, you may have noticed more creepy-crawlies around your house than in years past. Many students are saying that spiders are roaming students' homes in greater numbers than last year, and in some cases, they're bigger than before. Large spider webs seem to be common in the fall on Elon's trees. "I'm not really scared of spiders," Senior Tucker Bolding said.

Theater Master Class Takes the Stage

It's the one performance at Elon where the audience is part of the show: Improv. Yeager Recital Hall hosted the 2013 Improv Olympics Saturday night, which is a master class in Elon's theater department.

Drugs Found Near Mooney

A Physical Plant employee was working on an air conditioning unit on the east side of Mooney when he found drugs and paraphernalia. According to the police report, 8.9 grams of marijuana were found along with a red lighter, pill bottle, film bottle, glass jar, Magic Flight Vaporizer, Ziplock bag, Holy Cross bag and multicolored glass. Elon Police value the items seized at $150 and the incident remains under investigation.

Elon Community Reacts To Slurs

Campus is reacting to our report that two roommates woke up to hate language on Sunday morning. The two women, one Jewish and one African-American, claim they found drawings of 'KKK' and a swastika on the whiteboard of their suite. Chaplain Jan Fuller condemned the incident in a message to the Elon community that was posted on the Religious Center's website. "This is an unprecedented act of anti-Semitism for our campus, accompanied by all-too-familiar acts of racism," Fuller said.
