The NFL has its fair share of smart athletes. But the league also has more than its fair share on the other end of the spectrum. He isn't the only one, but for this week's idiot of the week, we have Ed Reed to thank.

The safety, who was in his first season with the Houston Texans, has been released by the team.

That's fine and dandy. It’s not like he was having the best year and the Texans don’t seem to be going anywhere fast with quarterback Matt Schaub benched and Case Keenum doing just enough to keep the Texans in games, only to lose by just a few points in the end.

Seriously, in three starts from Keenum, the Texans have lost three games by a total of seven points.

So fine, release Reed. But here’s the reasoning. And no, the Texans are not at fault for this. If I were in the team’s front office, he would be gone, too.

Reed called out the Houston coaching staff because he believes the team was “outcoached” this weekend against the Arizona Cardinals.

Newsflash Ed … your head coach, Gary Kubiak, had a warning stroke just before halftime of a game the week before. Your coaching staff was in disarray in the week leading up to the game against the Cardinals and Wade Phillips was the acting head coach. Not that it's any excuse, but Phillips lost his father just weeks before. And oh wait, your team lost 27-24. It wasn’t like you got blown out 38-8 like the Indianapolis Colts did against the Sam Bradford-less, Kellen Clemens-led St. Louis Rams. Really, that happened.

Sure, Houston is 2-7 this season and in the midst of a seven-game losing streak after winning its first two games, but that’s no excuse. Maybe Reed was just looking for a way out of Houston. Regardless, have a little sense to know what’s going on around you. I’m sorry you aren’t a Baltimore Raven anymore, but the world doesn’t revolve around you. It didn’t even revolve around you during your Baltimore years. Go thank Joe Flacco and Ray Lewis for that.

Who knows if this kind of stuff happened in Baltimore all those years. Did he really say things like this, or were they covered up all the time and dealt with internally?

Regardless, happy trails. Best of luck to you in finding a new job this season. Somebody is probably going to want you. Maybe even Baltimore after the debacle that was the Hail Mary as time expired this week against the Cincinnati Bengals. At least we know you've got the common knowledge to bat the ball down to the ground, not up in the air like current Ravens safety James Ihedigbo did.

By the way, Baltimore won that game 20-17 on a Justin Tucker field goal in overtime and they're now 4-5 — just two games better than Houston. Which by the way, does anyone really want that division? It seems like all four teams are doing their best to pass it along to the next.

Also for the record, Dwayne Bowe is a close second this week after being arrested on possession of marijuana Sunday night. That's smart, considering you're on the only undefeated team left in the league and going into a critical division matchup with the Denver Broncos.
