Not just numbers: Professor brings creativity to math in origami course

Alan Russell's love for folding paper began at age seven, when his mom gave him an origami book. Today, Russell, an associate professor of mathematics, gets to perform his passion regularly, teaching an interdisciplinary course, Math Origami, at Elon University. This course, an Upper Level General Studies class, is open to all majors, who often combine their major studies with the creativity of origami throughout the semester.

Elon swept in SoCon for first time since 2010

A rough-going on offense Friday, a struggle all-around on Saturday and another dismal day Sunday provided enough for the Elon University baseball team to be swept in Southern Conference play for the first time since March 2010. The Phoenix lost 5-1 Friday and 12-3 Saturday to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and took a 13-4 defeat on Sunday to end the series. Elon swept UNCG a year ago on the road as well.

Police: Three Elon football players hurt at party.

Three Elon football players suffered injuries after fighting with non-Elon students at a party on West College Avenue early Sunday morning, according to police. The police report says quarterback Michael Quinn, linebacker Jonathan Spain and defensive back Thomas Hatchel Linens were injured in the fight. The report said Michael Quinn was standing with his jeans around his ankles and had a triangular shaped injury to his right upper thigh when officer James Turney responded.

Elon softball sends seniors off in style

The final game for the six seniors on the Elon University softball team — left fielder Carleigh Nester, shortstop Ali Ford, right fielder Lauren Oldham, designated player Johanna Spencer, outfielder Amanda Allen and the injured Karen Berna — could not have been scripted any better. The game began with a moving ceremony in which each of the players were recognized for their contributions to the team, and ended with a walk-off fielder’s choice in the bottom of the ninth to give the Phoenix a 3-2 win over Samford University on Sunday, April 27. “We told the seniors that as big a game as it was for them (personally) being senior day, it was as important that we got the win and took the series,” Bocock said.

Phoenix falls to Jacksonville to end regular season

The Elon University women’s lacrosse team was hit with a momentum-killing 17-4 loss to Jacksonville University today, April 27. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Phoenix wasn’t able to handle the experienced pressure of the Dolphins attack.

Elon fizzles in all phases against UNCG

GREENSBORO    —    In search of momentum moving forward in the Southern Conference, the Elon University baseball team fell backwards. The Phoenix lost the first two games of a three-game series with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro by scores of 5-1 and 12-3.

Phoenix splits doubleheader with Samford

The Elon University softball team split the first two of a three game set with Southern Conference foe Samford University at Hunt Softball Park on April 26, losing the first game 3-1 before returning the favor in the day’s second game with a 6-1 win. The Bulldogs struck first in the top of the first inning of the first game.
