Holocaust survivor shares story of hope, life

From Holland to Jamaica, a story of hope and life can span many countries. For Lex Silbiger, that was the trek he and his family took when he was 6 years old. On Feb. 12, Alexander “Lex” Silbiger spoke to Elon University students, staff and community members as part of the Holocaust Remembrance Day Speaker Series.

Elon University student musicians share their passions across campus, beyond

For Elon students, Nailah Ware and Xie Atkinson, a love for music began during childhood. Now, both share their music, passion and lived experiences on and off campus. The two artists seek opportunities on and off campus, including in the music production and recording arts department, in on campus clubs such as Limitless and Limelight Records, performing in off-campus shows and releasing music to streaming platforms.

Elon University celebrates 100 years of Black history

Students, faculty, staff and members from the Elon Black Alumni Network gathered together for the Center for Race, Ethnicity and Diversity Education’s Black History Month Kickoff and Black Table Talk event. Around 100 people united together in the McBride Gathering Space, inside the Truitt Center, to discuss the theme for the night, “History In The Making: Roots, Routes, and Resistance.”

North Carolina Supreme Court prepares for 2026 Election

The North Carolina Supreme Court is preparing to have another election in 2026. Democratic incumbent Anita Earls and Representative Sarah Stevens will be facing off in Nov. for the court seat. This election comes after Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin didn’t concede the 2024 Supreme Court race to Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs until May 2025, after a six-month legal battle.

Elon Class of 2026, alumni named Fulbright semi-finalists

Eleven Elon University seniors and alumni have been named semifinalists for the 2026-2027 Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Founded in 1946 and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program offers research, study, and English teaching opportunities in more than 140 countries across the world.

Elon Town Council reviews sustainability efforts, ordinance amendments

The Elon Town Council received an annual update from the Sustainability Committee, held public hearings for a Land Management Ordinance text amendment and Elon University text amendment and addressed proposed ordinances and resolutions in chapters 13 and 17. There were no participants in the public comments portion of the agenda.

Mebane bookstore provides escape for readers

For just over five months, Mebane resident Taylor Collier has worked to create an inclusive space and community for book lovers inside a small corner in Sweet Grace Market in Mebane. Her new bookstore, No Bad Books, has been open since Nov. 1, selling a variety of books alongside hosting events like book clubs and book release parties.

From breakout scorers on the court to record-setting runs on the track, the Phoenix have found impact players up and down the roster, offering a snapshot of the depth and momentum building across Elon athletics. In the past two weeks, these four athletes have showcased themselves as predominant parts of their teams and Elon athletics overall.

Turnovers, 3-pointers lead to third straight loss for Elon

The Elon University men’s basketball team lost 82-77 to Drexel University in what is now their fifth loss in the last six games. Elon never led and now falls to a 5-7 record in the Coastal Athletic Association. Drexel, who entered the game last in conference scoring, put up 82 points in front of an energetic crowd that saw a season high 2,021 people in attendance.

City council leads new projects across Graham

Now two months into her city council term, Graham’s new mayor Chelsea Dickey has begun leading several projects and initiatives across the city. Dickey has focused on setting goals for the remainder of her term with support from the council. In a Facebook post on Jan. 20, she announced the completion of a workshop with fellow council members where they outlined priorities for the upcoming budget cycle. During the workshop the council created their three-year goals including continuing to support parks and recreation initiatives, promoting economic growth in Graham, maintaining infrastructure, improving safety, and strengthening community engagement.

First-year parking lot causes safety concerns

Less than a month after the new first-year parking lot opened by the Francis Center, freshmen are raising concerns about their safety walking to and from the Gateway lot. Elon freshman Andy Bowman works at the Publix grocery store in Burlington, around a ten minute drive from campus. Bowman said that as a manager, he usually gets off of work at 11:15 p.m. After his shift is over, Bowman drives back to campus and then walks from the first-year parking lot back to his dorm in Colonnades — totaling a 30-minute walk. Bowman said that he usually gets back to his dorm at 12:30 a.m.

Students received an E-Alert around 4 a.m. April 5, informing them of an assault earlier that night in the Mill Point neighborhood and urging anyone with information to contact campus police.

Elon University, Go Baby Go modify cars for children with mobility challenges

Elon University’s Innovation Hall was filled with the high-pitched hums of electric motors and the sounds of childhood play April 4. The noises came from the first Go Baby Go program at Elon, where the community takes standard electric toy cars and adapts them for children who cannot traditionally operate one.
