NTIM: Do we have a right to values?

  So far in college, I’ve learned it is impossible to view U.S. politics from only one perspective. Like the range of students at a liberal arts college, the combinations of viewpoints are endless. Notions of representation and freedoms become jumbled in rhetoric about identity politics in this era of globalization.  We grapple daily with our differing interests, occupations and political affiliations. These three, together, are derived from our self-imposed rules and values. 

EDITORIAL: Elon's ninth president faces challenges in new role

On Oct. 9, Elon University announced its newest President-elect, Constance “Connie” Ledoux Book, who will be the university’s first female president. This announcement came after a closed eight-monthlong search that left many Elon community members wanting more information.  Book is undoubtedly very qualified for this job — her experiences in her varying roles at Elon and at her previous institution, The Citadel, show her commitment to and passion for higher education. Many students, faculty and staff members who knew or worked with her during her time here at Elon showed excitement for her return.

Book was introduced to the Elon Community in an event in Alumni Gym on Monday afternoon following introductions from Kerii Anderson, Elon trustee, and Wes Elingburg, head of the presidential search committee.

Damages in Smith Residence Hall discussed over Family Weekend

More than 20 students are displaced after a urinal was ripped from the wall in Smith residence hall, the all-male freshman dorm in Historic Neighborhood. The incident occurred early in the morning Sept. 30 in a communal bathroom on the first floor. Elon Physical Plant is now using intense drying and heating machines to prevent mold growth on the first floor.

Power outages spread across campus Thursday afternoon due to a cut electrical wire near East Trollinger Avenue, according to Lt. M. Brewer of the Town of Elon Police. Most South Campus locations' power should be restored at this time, excluding the Ellington Center and South Gym.  

LENETT: There's more value in owning fewer things

To my surprise, I was the last person in my flat to finish unpacking on the morning of move-in day. Only about an hour before, Danieley N was swarming with fellow first-years and their parents, who brought the building to life with their energy and conversation.  But as the last drawer of my wardrobe clicked to a close, everything fell silent. Peaking my head out of the doorway, I listened for a murmur or a pin drop, for the assurance that I wasn’t alone in my very first hours of college. 

OSBORNE: Don't let the fear of the "Freshman Fifteen" run your life

Before anyone decides to rant or send me an angry email about how backward I am when it comes to body image, or that I am most definitely sponsored by Weight Watchers and other similar companies, note that the “Freshman Fifteen” is in quotation marks. Nonmajor students embrace musical theater off campus

Elon University has an intensive and selective musical theater program. This year, 20 students were selected from an applicant pool of 802. But outside of Scott Studios and the Center for the Arts it doesn’t take long to hunt down the plainclothes theater junkies; there’s the guy in Oak House with a cast party picture from his high school production of “Chicago” as his desktop, and the girl in the religious studies seminar who absentmindedly hummed the opening number of “The Book of Mormon.”

If I could equate the state of our country’s politics right now, it’d be to an episode of my mom and I debating about my chores when I was in grade school. 

Glossing over Puerto Rico

For three Elon University students, going home for Fall and Thanksgiving Break will mean facing a new reality on the island of Puerto Rico.  Hurricane Maria struck the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico Sept. 20., two weeks after the island was barraged by Hurricane Irma. The recovery is estimated to take years and cost $30-60 billion. As of Oct. 2, 16 people have been confirmed dead by Maria, while 30 remain missing. Meanwhile, the majority of the island is still without power and lacking access to basic necessities such as clean water, fuel and food.

McEwen dining hall renovations on schedule

Construction fences surround McEwen Dining Hall, but renovations have not begun yet. Brad Moore, the Elon university architect and director of planning, design and construction management, said constructions are still on schedule. 

WSOE celebrates 40 years of student radio

While the community may be familiar with Elon University’s student-run radio station WSOE, few know their call sign actually stands for "Wonderful Sounds of Elon." This year, the station is celebrating 40 years of broadcasting across Elon and Burlington. The station has heard from many WSOE alumni as they celebrate four decades.
