SGA held an open forum, “Starting Together,” this evening, which discussed the future of the student body in its new legislative year.

This is the first meeting where the new senate members and new appointees are joining the SGA legislative body. Members openly shared concerns about how they wanted to be more accessible to students, increase in school spirit and increasing interaction in the community.

One concern was that students aren’t aware of what SGA does and the funds SGA can provide to student organizations. SGA wants to make themselves more available to students and engage with the Elon community.

“We are a direct representation — that is our role. We are not a programming body, per se. We are more of an advocacy group,” said Kenneth Brown Jr., SGA executive president. “We are to represent the rights, thoughts, feelings and opinions of the student body and to provide for activities.”

After openly discussing school spirit, Jack Johnson, executive secretary, asked students to join a school spirit committee.

“One thing that concerns me is the lack of school spirit we so often see...How can we enhance that?”Johnson said.

But Nick Urbanski, class of 2021 secretary, said he did not feel the same.

“Obviously, Elon does have a lot of school spirit," Urbanski said. "Most of the students that come here that I go in contact with love going here. I don’t think Elon is necessarily lacking in school spirit."

Maintaining better relationships with other student organizations is a huge part in the new policies in SGA’s coming legislative year.

“Just meeting with them face to face is going to make the biggest impact," said the senator for the Arts Council, Warren Barrett.

SGA encouraged students to attend by inviting those who came to the town hall to Oak House and paying for non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. The next SGA meeting will be in Moseley 215 at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
