Elon Day celebration irks freshman due to solicitation link

Elon Day may aim to celebrate the university's 125th anniversary through reaching out to alumni for donations, but that's not how all students view the day. Freshman Patrick Everett will not participate in Elon Day because he doesn't agree with the administration's decision of combining celebration with solicitation. "You're here to get an education," Everett said.

Bitcoin redefines traditional currency as digital alternative

For many people, the first time they saw or heard the term “Bitcoin,” it was on the pages of the business section or on CNBC or Fox Business as analysts reported that large quantities of the digital currency went missing. While there are only around 200,000 registered Bitcoin addresses with at least one bitcoin, what made the news of this relatively underused digital currency grab headlines is that the disappearance of these bitcoins represented a loss of around $460 million. Bitcoin was the first “cryptocurrency,” created in 2009 as an all-digital form of money that can be spent between individuals using a peer-to-peer public ledger that keeps track of all transactions. While many other forms of digital currency have come since Bitcoin was unveiled, including the Canadian government-backed MintChip, Bitcoin has remained the most widely used cryptocurrency. “You assign your computer to do some hard math problems in its spare time and when it’s done, you’ve mined one bitcoin.

Stroll-Off ties university with Elon community

Dancing, cheering, screeching and a lot of shouting filled Alumni gym, Saturday, March 8. It was all a part of the second annual Stroll-Off, hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. This year they had a special opening act. "The Alphas approached us and wanted some of our Boys and Girls Club kids to be part of the show, to be the opening act," said Tara Nager, Alamance County Boys and Girls Club Program Director.

Men's tennis eases past Davidson

The Elon University men’s tennis team cruised past in-state rival Davidson College on Sunday, March 9, winning in decisive fashion 6-1. “I feel like we’re getting stronger and I’m happy about the performance,” Elon head coach Michael Leonard said. Review: Broadway Speaks Out: A “gender-bent” Broadway cabaret

The Broadway Speaks Out cabaret held in Elon University’s Black Box Theatre benefitted the National Eating Disorder Association. A variety of songs were performed at the cabaret, ranging from “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction to “Mama Who Bore Me” from the musical “Spring Awakening.” Energy was in no shortage from the moment the cast stepped out on stage to open with Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” making everyone in the room want to get up and dance along.

Elon softball wins pair of tight games

The Elon University softball team ran its winning streak to seven games with wins over Towson University and Radford University March 9 at Hunt Softball Park. Against Towson, Elon won on a walk-off base hit to left field from freshman designated player Cary Million in the bottom of the eighth to score sophomore Emilie Rowand and give the Phoenix a dramatic 3-2 victory. The inning began with senior second baseman Lauren Oldham moving Rowand over with a sacrifice bunt.

Foster homes offer hope to dogs

When Senior Emily Tryon moved into her pet friendly apartment, she immediately began looking for a dog to be her new roommate. "I saw that Izzy's owner had died and she needed a place to stay, so I was like I'll take her," Tryon said. Tryon found Izzy through a group called Carolina Border Collie Rescue.

Little Free Libraries open up in Alamance County

Medora Burke-Scoll brings her daughter Zelda to the Holt Street Park in Mebane every weekend. Zelda is growing fast, and she is improving one particular talent: reading. Elon eliminated in SoCon semis by UTC

A day after using a strong game down low to push past Appalachian State, the Elon University Women's Basketball couldn't repeat the performance, struggling in the paint on its way to a 77-44 semi-final loss against the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. With the victory, UTC moves on to play the winner of Davidson and Western Carolina The defeat ends the season for the Phoenix, in addition to an era, as Elon moves to the Colonial Athletic Association after a decade of Southern Conference play. It was a day where nothing went right for Elon, and nothing went wrong for UTC.
