It looked as though the Elon University softball team would escape Hunt Softball Park March 20 with a victory over nonconference foe Towson University, but the Tigers had other ideas, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh and holding the Phoenix scoreless in the bottom of the inning to pull out a hard-earned 8-7 win. Up one and with junior reliever Caitlin O’Shea having shut the Tigers out for the previous three innings, the Phoenix entered the top of the last three outs from their 17th win of the season. But the Tigers used Phoenix miscues and a couple of fortunate breaks to scratch out a pair of runs. A one out bloop single from Tigers senior third baseman Delanie Dunham was the first of the team’s fortuitous breaks.
NFL free agency requires a fast-acting front office, as the most coveted free agents are signed shortly after the period begins. Many players even come to contract agreements with teams before free agency formally begins, though they cannot officially sign on the dotted line until free agency opens. One team that is being left in the dust in this process is the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers made it to the playoffs last season for the first time since 2008, but lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional round. Led by their dominating defense, the Panthers looked like a team on the rise. But a lack of movement during the free agency period that began March 11 is troubling and is leaving the team’s promising future in doubt.

Junior Stefan Fortmann recently earned Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 3-9, making him the third Elon University player to earn the honor this season. But the South African’s journey to all-conference accolades was by no means conventional. Fortmann had a rocky start to the 2014 campaign, losing five of his first six singles matches. “I had been struggling for a while now, especially in singles play,” Fortmann said.
The 2014 Southern Conference baseball season marks the end of an era. For the last several years, the SoCon has been a premier mid-major baseball league, often ranked in the Top 10 in conference RPI in the NCAA. In the latest round of conference realignment, largely driven by football and men’s basketball, baseball was a casualty in the SoCon.
You might have passed a new classmate any time between Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15. Elon's incoming students got their first taste of college life this past weekend at "Rising Phoenix Weekend," formerly known as Spring Orientation. The Class of 2018 came from all over the country with relatives and friends to tour the campus and prepare for their college careers. Assistant Director of Admissions, Scott Christopherson, organized the event and gave 7-minute introduction sessions before every tour. "This gives the incoming students a chance to see what it would be like to be a student on campus," Christopherson said. Students were given tours of the campus and were able to sit attend informational sessions about Elon Experiences and academics. More incoming students from the Class of 2018 will visit campus later in April for an additional Rising Phoenix Weekend event.

The Phoenix, which plays in Division II of the SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC), began the season ranked No.

As a one-bid league, the Southern Conference is an afterthought in the grand scheme of March Madness. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments feature a single Southern Conference team, the conference tournament champions. For the men, the 15th-seeded Wofford College Terriers used a late-season surge and run through the SoCon tournament to claim the NCAA bid.
Earlier this year, a freshman at Duke University was outed to the school, and later to the rest of the country, for acting in adult films to pay her tuition. Media outlets flocked to the story.

The performance’s first piece was “luminitza,” a contemporary ballet work choreographed by Elon assistant professor of dance Jen Guy Metcalf. The entire stage was completely dark with the exception of the back of the stage, which was lit by lamps.
