Proposed master plan brings major changes to downtown Elon

The Town of Elon has proposed a new revitalization plan that would restructure the eight-block area known as downtown Elon. The plan calls for the construction of 10 mixed-use buildings, six residential buildings, an office space and a civic/hospitality space. The first floor of the mixed-use buildings will house retails and restaurants, while the upper floors will serve as either offices or residential spaces depending on the building.

‘Vagina Monologues’ helps fight abuse against women

Every year on Valentine’s Day, people around the world perform “The Vagina Monologues” as part of an international movement called the V-Day Campaign. Friday evening, EFFECT and Women’s/Gender Studies presented Elon University’s own version of the show in Whitley Auditorium. The campaign fights against and helps raise awareness about violence against women. “I think ‘The Vagina Monologues,’ because of its theatrical nature, provides a unique way for Elon students of all genders to really think about what it means to be a woman in the world today,” said director Jessie Bond, a junior theater studies major. Cost of entry was $5, and all proceeds went to Family Abuse Services in Burlington. “One goal is to raise money to stop violence against women,” Bond said.

SGA's no-contest election: Many run unopposed, executive presidency competitive

A group of aspiring Elon University student government representatives convened Monday, Feb. 17 in McEwen to deliver speeches in favor of their canidacies, followed by a spirited debate between the two executive president hopefuls. Elon takes second game, series against Cincinnati

The Elon University baseball team took the latter end of a two-game series with the University of Cincinnati, topping the Bearcats 3-1 at North Carolina State University. Junior Jake Stalzer went seven innings on the hill to earn the win, allowing one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts.

NC abortion provision heads to appeals court

North Carolina is the catalyst for one of the first appeals court hearings on the constitutionality of “speech and display laws.” Speech and display laws require a patient seeking an abortion to receive an ultrasound beforehand while a doctor gives a medical description of the fetus displayed. A 2011 law in North Carolina contained a speech and display provision, which was deemed unconstitutional by U.S.

NCAA to allow Snapchat as recruiting tool for coaches

The world of college recruiting is about to get very interesting and a bit more personal. Now that the NCAA is allowing college coaches to communicate with prospects via Snapchat, getting a “selfie” from Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski could be in the cards for potential student-athletes. And if that happens, you better take a screenshot. This policy will officially start August 2014.

AAC basketball exceeding expectations in inaugural year

As the old Big East Conference split apart and the newly formed American Althletic Conference was formed with holdovers from the old Big East being joined by the University of Houston, Southern Methodist University, the University of Memphis, and Temple University, many pundits relegated the conference to that of a “mid-major.” Yet, the AAC has been a pleasant surprise in its inaugural college basketball season.

Campus flowers freeze in snow, low temperatures

The snowy weather may have closed school for students, but Elon's groundskeepers work extra hard to keep campus looking colorfully filled with flowers as the spring months quickly approach. Soon students, parents, faculty and staff will gather "Under the Oaks" for graduation and the landscaping team is working their hardest to keep the 30,000 pansies Elon has looking beautiful. "You know the term 'pansy' is like a wuss, but actually the pansy is a pretty tough flower," said groundskeeper Frank Clapp. Although students had many snowball fights and snowmen building competitions last week, the pansies will hopefully be able to survive. Clapp said that pansies should retain their durability and the snow should cause the flowers significant harm.

Synchronized skating shoots Lauren Snow to the top

While most encounter international competition through TV, one Elon student experienced it firsthand by competing with her synchronized skating team, Skyliners. Lauren Snow, a junior at Elon, began to skate when she was 3 years old and then started Synchronized Skating when she was 5 years old. "It was at my rink, I wanted to get involved with a team sport because I was tired of skating individually and that just seemed like the best fit," Snow said. What started out as a fun event held by her orthodontist turned into hard work and dedication. "I skated thirty hours a week: on ice, ballet training, off-ice training.

Elon Votes sponsors State of the Union watch party

Around 15 students gathered in Moseley Center on Feb. 24 for the State of the Union watch party, hosted by Elon Votes. The broadcast was President Trump’s first State of the Union of his second term and lasted a record 108 minutes, according to AP News. The previous record for the longest presidential address to Congress was 100 minutes and was set by Trump last year.
