Far from home: Elon tennis player draws inspiration, strength from challenging times

A series of text messages were blowing up sophomore tennis player Miray Konar’s phone on the evening of Feb. 6. The texts were coming from Konar’s friend in Lebanon, asking if her family in Turkey was safe. Konar, who was unaware that an earthquake hit her home country, was hearing the news for the first time.

A Different Vision: One athlete’s unique experience with lacrosse

Senior Rachel Mikolay will always remember the day her life changed. The former goalie for the Elon University lacrosse team was a freshman at the time preparing for the upcoming season like any other day. After weeks of cardio training, 5K marathons and bike rides, Mikolay one day lost vision in one of her eyes.

Elon University softball steps on to the diamond

The Elon University softball team stepped onto the field for the first time in the 2023 regular season playing in the Elon Softball Classic tournament Feb. 10 to  to 11. The team has played four games so far — two against Winthrop University, one against North Carolina Central University and one against Morgan State University — and finished 1-3 with its only win coming against NC Central.

Elon University freshman tennis recruit inspired by hometown hero

Freshman Veljko Krstic, tennis player for the Elon men’s tennis team, came to Elon from Belgrade, Serbia. Novak Djokovic, the world's best tennis player according to the Association of Tennis Professionals, comes from the same city as Krstic.

Cole Clark walked around Elon University’s campus on a gloomy day in January. The prospective student toured what he thought could be his future home, especially after being informed about Elon’s academics, campus life and post-graduate opportunities.

Elon University’s Student Union Board to host Alex Moffat as spring comedian

Elon University’s Student Union Board will host Alex Moffat as the spring comedian this year. Moffat is best known for his work on “Saturday Night Live” as a cast member during its 42nd season in 2016. He remained a cast member for subsequent seasons and left the NBC sketch comedy show in 2022.

Elon University men’s basketball survives late push from Hampton University

The Elon University men’s basketball team defeated the Hampton University Pirates 70-68 late Monday night during its Pajama Jam Night. Freshman guard Max Mackinnon’s late game heroics rescued the Phoenix from surrendering a 17 point lead early in the second half.

Elon University students, community celebrate NAACP Founders Day

Alamance County has a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People youth council, a college division and an adult branch for the first time ever. The NAACP is a civil rights organization founded on Feb. 12, 1909. Their mission is to fight for racial equality for all people.

Elon University dance program to host Black in the Theatre, Black History Month dance concert

Elon Dance partnered with the CREDE this year to put together this Black History Month Dance Concert called Black in the Theatre, directed by Keisha Wall, professor of dance at Elon. Together, they chose the theme “Black Renaissance” to celebrate Black art. Black in the Theatre has been put on at Elon since 2012 as part of Black History Month, but in 2020 — with Wall as the new director — they held their last in-person performance right before the COVID-19 pandemic placed concerts on pause. In 2021 and 2022, the performance was filmed with dancers wearing masks.

My Saturday morning begins at 6:30 a.m. All my tools, camera equipment and water bottles are already in a bag. The only thing I need to do is put on my lycra and take my bike out to the car. Elon University alumna Caroline Brehman ’18 will not only be attending the 2023 Super Bowl game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb.12 in Phoenix, Arizona, but she will be on the sidelines working as a photojournalist for the Eagles through European Pressphoto Agency.
