A rusted pipe in the second floor universal bathroom of the Moseley Student Center caused chaos Thursday afternoon when water flooded out of the bathroom. The water flooded the bathroom and upstairs hallway including inside the Center for Leadership office for about fifteen minutes until maintenance could shut the pipe off.

The water came down from the second floor onto the first through the elevator, which is now out of use. Moseley Student Center released a statement that if anyone needs the elevator, front desk workers will call a provided number to start the elevator.

Edith Smith, program assistant for the Center for Leadership said the water has affected accessibility to the second floor since yesterday.

Smith was in a meeting on the second floor when the pipe burst and said it sounded like pouring rain.

“We looked out the window and realized there was no rain,” Smith said. “So we looked the other direction and saw somebody open the bathroom door, and water was gushing out.”

Smith and her colleagues stopped their meeting to figure out who to call to clean up the mess. Maintenance arrived around 10 minutes after their call and began to clear the hallway.

“At that point, it’s in the hallway, it’s going down the elevator, it’s coming into our office — it was everywhere,” Smith said.

Tour guide senior Ally Everton said that the flooding can possibly impact people visiting the campus, if they need to get to the second floor.

“They may need to use the elevator for whatever reason, and it’s a really bad look on the university that we have it shut down for this extended period of time,” Everton said.

Everton said that the Moseley Student Center is a place to welcome all students, and it’s disappointing that the flooding happened.

“Obviously, it was kind of out of their control, but this is definitely inhibiting a lot of things at the moment,” Everton said.
