Battling Depression on a college campus

An American College Health Association, National College Health Assessment in 2011 study found that 30 percent of college students surveyed said they were "so depressed that it was difficult to function at some time in the past year." If that number applies to Elon, that could be roughly 1,500 students. Some students might catch themselves saying "I'm depressed" and not really understanding the seriousness of that statement.

Walk-on athletes find motivation to play through passions

Many walk-on athletes, who are on the roster but do not receive athletic scholarships, say they find their motivation by simply loving the game. "I get a high sense of fulfillment from playing," said Sam Hershberger, a junior on the men's basketball team. Hershberger was in contact with Elon coaches before enrolling in the university, but he said they were upfront in explaining he would be a walk-on athlete.

Habitat for Humanity changes lives of Burlington family

Tanisha Lea knows what it's like to struggle. "People shouldn't have to make the decisions that I had to make between do I pay the light bill or do I buy groceries," said Lea, a Habitat for Humanity homeowner. Eight years ago, Lea, a single mom, struggled to pay her rent and keep food on the table. "There were plenty of days when I didn't know where our meal was going to come from that night," she said. After talking to a co-worker about Habitat for Humanity, Lea applied for the program. "Right before I applied for the Habitat program, it was a very low point in life for me.

MT ‘15 to perform ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’

The Center for Performing Arts buzzed with energy at a rehearsal for “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” Elon University’s Senior Music Theater Class will perform the musical as a part of their senior capstone. Co-director Hunter Brown explained that the show is a murder-mystery with twists and turns that allow the audience to decide the ending. “The show is based off of a Charles Dickens novel, but Dickens died before he could write who the murderer was, so the audience votes who they think it is,” Brown said.

At Elon, 'first-year' has not replaced 'freshman,' university says

Elon University has not banned the use of the word freshman, and there is no policy dictating that the school uses the term “first-year” in place of “freshman,” according to Dan Anderson, vice president of University Communications. The university has received national media attention since a student from Elon reported that the school is dropping the word freshman and replacing it with first year.

Elon's Luis Vargas prepares for NCAA Championships

The stakes are higher and the competition is greater, but Luis Vargas has the same mindset entering his final race in an Elon University uniform. The senior who’s won all six races he’s competed in this year will top off his career on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind., at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. “Every race I try and take the same mentality,” said Vargas, noting his preparation and practice schedule this week was identical to the rest of the season.

Elon's Office of Greek Life explains hazing procedures

In the wake of fraternity hazing at West Virginia University, many schools are looking into their own hazing procedures for Greek Life and other campus organizations. At Elon University, the Student Conduct Policy defines hazing as "any activity that would interfere with a person's emotional, intellectual ability to perform academically regardless of their willingness to engage in it." Shana Plasters, Director of Greek Life, says hazing is an honor code violation, but it doesn't just apply to Greek Life. "Hazing's an honor code violation and so that's how we would look at it regardless the student group or the athletic team or whatever might be involved," Plasters said. According to Assistant Director of Greek Life Jordan King, preventing hazing on campus is a challenge. "I think getting through to students that that's not okay and giving them a voice to really be able to communicate that to people," King said.

Women’s lacrosse overcomes early deficit, earns impressive Senior Day win

The Elon women’s lacrosse team capped off their Senior Day with an impressive 9-4 win over William & Mary. In a game that was delayed by four hours from its initial start time at noon due to a chemical spill, the Phoenix furiously rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to outscore the Tribe 9-1 the rest of the way. The victory moves Elon back up to .500 at 6-6.

‘Romeo and Juliet’ gets a 1970s revival in McCrary Theatre

Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” may be centuries old, but Elon University’s spring production brings it into a new era, 1970s Italy, complete with disco music, dance numbers and a cast that mirrors the age of its audience. The idea came in January of 2025, when Professor Julian Stetkevych, director of the spring play, was listening to disco music.
