Elon application now inquires about sexual orientation, gender identity

Beginning this month and for the first time, applicants to Elon University will be given the option to identify themselves as part of the LGBTQIA community on the admissions application. The decision to ask Elon hopefuls an optional question about sexual orientation and gender identity is part of an effort to create an atmosphere of inclusion on campus before students arrive at Elon, said Matthew Antonio Bosch, director of the Gender and LGBTQIA Center. “We’ve created an institutional center, where people feel they belong, and that belonging now starts from the first moment of inquiring about the application process,” Bosch said. Elon and Duke University are the first schools in North Carolina to inquire about sexual orientation and gender identity on the admissions application.

Smith, Klein helping Elon in the middle: volleyball notebook

Danielle Smith doesn’t let her size bother her while playing middle blocker. The Elon University senior stands at 5 feet, 9 inches tall, but she remains effective going up against players who are typically 6 feet tall or bigger. “I’m used to being the small one in the middle,” Smith said.

Around the State: Horsin' around with Elon's service learning community

It's an early Saturday morning on Sept. 13, and Elon's service learning community isn't sleeping in. The group from Virginia Hall's first floor is up early to lend a hand at the Kopper Top Life Learning Center in Liberty, N.C. The farm for horses, cats, dogs, goats, bunnies and chickens opened 24 years ago with just three horses, and has provided a safe place for disabled children and adults to interact with animals in a form of interactive therapy ever since. With more than 30 horses today, the farm is an opportunity for clients to get a true hands-on experience. "It's actually amazing to see all these people come down, work on the horses, grooming them," said Elizabeth Canto, first year student.

Israeli Fellow brings perspective and personal story to Elon

Shani Knaani, an Israeli Fellow with the Jewish Agency for Israel and Hillel International, is paying a visit to Hillel and the Elon community as a whole. Knaani grew up in a kibbutz, a communal living area in northern Israel, and then moved on to join the Israeli army. "So in Israel, the army is mandatory," Knaani said.

El Centro celebrates Central American independence

To celebrate Central American independence, El Centro hosted a cultural jubilee outside Lakeside Dining Hall Monday evening. Held on the 193rd anniversary of Central America’s declaration of independence from Spain and at the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, the celebration included Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua. The event featured Hispanic food made by El Centro students, including a taco bar, coconut balls, baleadas from Honduras, gallo pinto from Costa Rica and flautas from Mexico. Students from all over campus came to enjoy the free food and experience the Hispanic culture.

YouTuber begins journey at Elon

You may say first year student Katy Bellotte has several online friends. She has close to 300 thousand YouTube subscribers. "It's crazy to think that I'm sitting in my dorm filming a video and [a] million people have the chance to watch it," Bellotte said. Her channel has more than 21 million views, but her online presence goes beyond YouTube.

Elon sweeps home cross country meet

The Elon University men’s and women’s cross country teams dominated a rainy Saturday morning at the Elon Cross Country Course by sweeping the Elon Invitational. The four-team meet, which also included North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and Lenoir-Rhyne University, featured a five-kilometer event for the women and an eight-kilometer race for the men.

Student research discovers suspected cause of plant disease

During his freshman year, now-senior Billy Impagliazzo took two classes taught by biology professor Antonio Izzo. When he got to Elon, Impagliazzo said he knew he wanted to take part in research projects. In his sophomore year, Impagliazzo went to Izzo to discuss research opportunities he had in his lab. Izzo said he believed Impagliazzo would conduct research for only a semester, but almost three years later, Impagliazzo has identified the main microbe infecting the blue curls plant and has presented his research on SURF Day.

Elon student digs into Burlington’s past after historic hotel demolition

The Rockefeller Integrated Hotel stood on Burlington’s Maple Avenue before being demolished a few weeks ago. Created by McBride “Mack” Thompson, a prominent African American entrepreneur in the Jim Crow South, the hotel was both his home and a place for Black travelers to stay somewhere safe. A single box of papers was recovered from the demolition site by a neighbor. Marshall Sears, a sophomore researching African American entrepreneurship in Petersburg, digitizes documents including those found in the demolition, as a part of his undergraduate research.
