When classes started in August, many students ventured to Elon University’s Barnes & Noble campus bookstore to retrieve their textbooks. This year, the shipment of those textbooks came with the delivery of a new bookstore manager, Jeremy Hunt. And similar to those books, there’s a story that led Hunt to Elon. It’s no secret by now that changes are happening in the North Carolina education system. As part of a sweeping overhaul of public schools across the state, North Carolina teachers have seen their benefits slashed, numbers reduced and a whopping $500 million drained from the public education budget. In the last few months, 2,800 jobs have been cut from education, 850 of which were teaching positions.

The results for the 2013 Sprite Films nationwide film competition are in and Elon University alum Dean Coots’ submission, titled “Break the Night,” won both the Green Ribbon Panel Award and Fan Favorite Award, making it the first double winner in the program's history, Sprite Films announced today. After winning the Green Ribbon Panel Award, senior Dean Coots — the film's director — will receive a $30,000 contract job to work alongside Sprite and The Coca-Cola Company brand executives to develop content.
