The Elon University softball team was swept by local rival University of North Carolina at Greensboro 10-2 and 10-8 in the first two games of a three-game set May 3 at UNCG Softball Park in Greensboro in what is the Phoenix’s last series before postseason play begins next week. In the first game, the Spartans used a dominant performance in the circle by senior starter Raeanne Hanks and hot bats from all nine starters to trounce the Phoenix 10-2. The Spartans began their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the first with four runs.
After getting swept by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and having its midweek game against Coastal Carolina University canceled because of weather, the Elon University baseball team took a step forward Friday night before regressing once again Saturday. Khaleesi, a black Labrador mix who crossed paths with students across campus, passed away Friday, April 25. Khaleesi had been loose for more than a month since escaping from its owners, two Elon University juniors. A new student political organization is aiming to join the likes of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) and the Elon College Democrats next fall. Democracy Matters, a national nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that seeks to “get big money out of politics and people back in” is in talks with Elon University to establish a chapter. The organization’s National Field Director, Anita Kinney, said it’s important not only to educate young people about politics, but to mobilize them and harness their energy also. “We strive to tell college students that there is always something you can do,” Kinney said.
Elon University will add a Teaching and Learning minor to its course catalog next fall for students interested in public education but not necessarily in teaching as a profession. The 20 credit hours required aim to train students to teach outside the classroom — ideas ranging from teaching adults how to build mobile applications to accommodating special needs in an office setting. The minor is designed to teach non-education majors how to translate educational principles to society.

"The farmers market is a great example of local foods and people in the community coming together to distribute those local foods," said Joe Makowitz, a first-year Elon student. Makowitz went to the ECC Farmers Market opening and says it is important for students to invest in local foods. "There are fewer emissions being spent to get the foods from the farms to the consumers," Makowitz said.
