Football pulls out emotional win at Maine

Surely playing with heavy hearts, the Elon University football team held on for a 27-22 victory over Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent University of Maine Saturday afternoon. In the first game after the death of junior wide receiver Demitri Allison, the Phoenix bursted out to a 17-0 lead in the first half, and was able to respond when the Black Bears stormed back in the fourth quarter.

Men's basketball smiling after season-opening win at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — After talking about ways that the Elon University men’s basketball team could improve after Friday night’s emphatic 85-74 victory over the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, head coach Matt Matheny couldn’t just say that his team would take the victory. “We’ll smile, we’ll smile,” he said. And smile they did, especially sophomore guard Dmitri Thompson, whose smile was so bright after his 21-point, eight-rebound performance, it could be seen from space. “We’ve been waiting for this moment for a longgggg, long time,” Thompson said.

Prioritizing discussions of privilege

Within minutes of sitting down Friday evening, attendees of Elon University's Intersect Diversity and Leadership Conference were back on their feet. They were challenged by sophomore Olivia Ryan, student director for the Intersect conference and opening speaker, to introduce themselves to two new people and share the story of how they came to the Intersect Conference.

Beta Theta Pi fraternity to join campus

Beta Theta Pi fraternity will be the newest fraternity to join campus in the spring of 2016, according to a Facebook announcement made Friday afternoon. According to the Facebook post from Elon's Fraternity and Sorority Life, representatives from the national office will be on Elon's campus the first week of December to provide more information to students. Beta Theta Pi and Theta Chi were the two finalists after Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Dan Faill annouced there would be a new Interfraternity Council organization coming to campus. Both Beta Theta Pi and Theta Chi presented for members of the Greek community in October. For Beta Theta Pi, the tone was focused on changing the overall Greek culture and providing opportunities for all kinds of young men on campus, especially those who might have never have considered joining a fraternity. Beta Theta Pi was founded by a group of men at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1839.

Lone freshman enters spotlight for Elon

There’s only one freshman on the Elon University women’s basketball team this year, and according to senior guard Josepha Mbouma, the Phoenix may have found a gem. “If we’re only to have one freshman, we got the perfect one,” Mbouma said. The “perfect one” is guard/forward Nikki McDonald, who comes to Elon from Atlanta. And she’s been making heads turn throughout the preseason practices.

Diehl highlights men's soccer award winners

Eight Elon University men’s soccer players were named to All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)cq jsteams, as released by the league offices Nov. 12. Senior defender Nathan Diehl was named CAA Defender of the Year and in addition to being named First Team All-CAA alongside fellow Phoenix senior midfielders James Brace and Miguel Salazar.

Column: Sophomores ready to fill big roles

Elon University women’s basketball coach Charlotte Smith threw Shay Burnett and Malaya Johnson, the team’s two freshmen, right into the fire last year. And they produced. Burnett, a guard, led the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game, and Johnson, a forward averaged 7.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Elon University had a number of issues on its men’s basketball team a year ago. Injuries, the transition to the Colonial Athletic Association and post play were among them. The first is uncontrollable, but the latter two shouldn’t be of concern as the Phoenix sets sail on a new year.

Football's 2016 CAA schedule released

The 2016 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) football schedule has been released online, revealing the Elon University football team’s eight conference games. The University of Delaware sent out a release late Thursday night stating that the CAA announced the league schedule for 2016, which was posted in a grid linked to the website. The Phoenix will open CAA play Week 4 by traveling to the College of William & Mary Sept. 24.

Women’s basketball carries tough defeat into new year

Even as the new season is set to begin for the Elon University women’s basketball team, there has been a focus on the way last season ended. In the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament semifinals, the Phoenix faced off against James Madison University, and had multiple chances to win the game late. But Elon was unable to make three potentially tying baskets in the final minute, including two 3-point tries from senior forward Same Coffer ’15 in the last 20 seconds, and lost 63-60. The Dukes would go on to win the CAA championship the next day, leaving an image that head coach Charlotte Smith decided to use. “Last year, after the season, Coach Smith actually put posters on our lockers of JMU holding up the trophy,” said senior guard Josepha Mbouma.

Europe excursion has Elon gelling

The Elon University men’s basketball team is in the middle of roster turnover, with five freshmen joining the already young roster. With so many new faces in, getting players to gel together was going to be quite the challenge for head coach Matt Matheny. But, according to Matheny, the study abroad trip they took to Europe in August has the chemistry better than every before. “I think it’s at an all-time high,” Matheny said.

No one said anything, because no one knew what to say. No cameras flashed. No cellphones glowed. The only lights were the streetlights and the dozens of candles brought by those in attendance, and of the shooting star one person saw as he arrived. Gathered in remembrance of junior Demitri Allison, a wide receiver on the Elon University football team, hundreds stood in silence.
