ElonTHON breaks record for total money raised "for the kids"

SGA hosts town hall as part of sexual assault awareness month

The Student Government Association hosted its 6th town hall on Thursday, which allowed students to openly discuss the issue of gender and sexual-based violence on campus. The event, moderated by Elon News Network Executive Director Jackie Pascale, was meant to facilitate a discussion about what were issues surrounding the topic of sexual harassment, specifically on Elon's campus, and what the role of students is in solving those issues. The town hall was the first event hosted by the incoming student body administration, which was sworn in just a few days after spring break. Student Body President Morgan Bodenarain said that although there is already a conversation about gender and sexual-based violence on campus, the climate surrounding it is a conversation that the organization wanted to have. "I think a lot of time we talk about how the administration is responding to these kinds of things, but never how the student body is responding to it," said Bodenarain.

Carnegie Hall presents: The Shirley Tempos

For the Shirley Tempos, one of Elon University’s female a cappella groups, the members never imagined scoring an opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. However, their dreams will soon become a reality Sunday, April 14 when they will perform in Total Vocal, a contemporary a cappella music concert in Midtown Manhattan, with Deke Sharon, the father of contemporary a cappella who created the event. In this performance, 14 of the 16 Shirley Tempos members will sing four songs, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, “Put on a Happy Face”, “Summertime” and “We Are Home”, while also enjoying arrangements from cast members of the movie Pitch Perfect. In order to receive this opportunity, president of Shirley Tempos Sabrina Campelo ’18 took the initiative.

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
