Elon students learn about county through community engagement

When Elon University sophomore Rachel Gilman began her teaching practicum at Grove Park Elementary School, she felt as if nothing could have prepared her for the drastic differences between the lifestyles students led and the one she was accustomed to. “From the first time I set foot in the school, I was in culture shock,” Gilman said.

DOJ investigation affects ACSO's 287(g)

Fairness Alamance, a Burlington immigration rights group, held a press conference last Friday to speak out against the Alamance County Sheriff, Terry Johnson and to discuss the findings of the Department of Justice's investigation. Suyapa Mejia- Guevara was one of several Latinos who spoke out against the ACSO.

Sheriff opposes DOJ’s allegations concerning treatment of Latinos

Editor's note 10/18: During a telephone interview Tim Sutton, Alamance County commissioner, said: "There are countless stories in Alamance County of people being killed by illegal immigrants." After publication he amended his statement to say "There are countless stories in the country of people being killed by illegal immigrants." The United States Department of Justice  recently released the results of a two-year investigation of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office,which stated the ACSO and Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson had violated federal law and engaged in discriminatory policing against Latinos.

Women's soccer gets revenge on rival College of Charleston

The Elon University women’s soccer team found sweet revenge Sunday against the College of Charleston, beating the Cougars 2-0 on Rudd Field after losing both matches last season against the Cougars, one being in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament. “I just feel really great about our team today,” said Elon head coach Chris Neal.
