Illegal and Unidentified

On the last Friday in September, Father Paul stands in front of a small crowd of Latinos and Hispanics at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Burlington. They wait patiently to hear what he has to say. Father Paul welcomes them in heavily accented Spanish, an unwavering smile spread across his face. He switches to English and invites an interpreter to help him with the rest of the information.

Ending hazing is up to students

 

As part of on-going efforts to end hazing at Elon University, the recently established Hazing Prevention Coalition organized events last week to participate in National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW). The Coalition has brought new energy to the fight against hazing at Elon, but there is still a long way to go.

House Bill 318 Update

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 29, House Bill 318 has been ratified by the N.C. General Assembly and is to be presented to Governor Pat McCrory on Wednesday morning. Short titled, Protect North Carolina Workers Act, the bill aims to make stricter rules for employers that are verifying whether or not their employees can legally work in North Carolina and also includes a section that tightens rules regarding the forms of identification that government and law enforcement officers can accept. That second part is an issue that concerns local law enforcement in Alamance County, who have recently began issuing and accepting alternative ID cards in the area.

Elon dance tradition soars for eighth year

On Sunday, Sept. 27, the annual “Dancing in the Landscape” glided through Elon’s main campus. The performance featured all twelve of the first-year BFA Dance students at Elon as well as the junior and senior class  “Dancing in the Landscape” is an Elon tradition that was celebrating their eighth year this Sunday.

Gigi Hadid speaks out against body shaming

It is no surprise that Gigi Hadid has class and dignity on top of her dazzling looks. On Monday, Gigi released a statement on Instagram that captured her raw emotions and feelings towards the negative comments she receives on social media about her looks and figure. “These are obviously also people that don’t think of you as an actual human with actual feelings, which I think is a really big problem right now in social media,” Gigi told Vogue.com exclusively. “There are people who feel like they’re able to hide behind their usernames and their private accounts, who feel like they can say whatever they want and it won’t affect anyone.

Mental health checkups: Checking in

As suicide prevention month continues, some students have been wondering why Elon does not require pre-screening for mental health issues like depression or anxiety. More than one thousand suicides take place on college campuses every year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Elon University, Go Baby Go modify cars for children with mobility challenges

Elon University’s Innovation Hall was filled with the high-pitched hums of electric motors and the sounds of childhood play April 4. The noises came from the first Go Baby Go program at Elon, where the community takes standard electric toy cars and adapts them for children who cannot traditionally operate one.
