Piano encourages artisitic mentality in student center

New melodies echoed through Moseley this week stemming from a piano. The music is thanks to junior Connor Whitaker's idea to move the piano from McKinnon Hall to the Moseley student center. "I think having a piano to play adds to a creatively conducive environment where students aren't afraid to just present themselves and another asset that they have," Whitaker said. An avid piano player, Whitaker would "occasionally just play whenever, just when I had free time" when it was in McKinnon.

Campus security employee has a hidden talent

While the rest of campus closes for the night, Kim Farmer arrives at work. Farmer works the night shift as a Telecommunicator for Campus Safety and Security, but when he's not at Elon, Farmer explores his passion for music. Farmer is the lead singer of the 70s rock band, Zachary Smythe.

Ask an Alum: Budgeting financially... and the fear of drowning in your own debt

This piece is the eighth in a series of “Ask an Alum” columns that will be periodically published online through a partnership between Elon University’s Young Alumni Council and The Pendulum. I am not here to beat a dead horse and tell you that you need to save money and budget your finances.  Not only should you budget your finances on a monthly basis, but it would probably be a good idea to write out a weekly (and maybe even an annual) budget as well.  But again, I am not here to tell you that.  I am here to provide a little insight to the real world and what it could cost you. Just a few years ago, with the American economy booming, banks loved seeing private school students walk through the door to open bank accounts.  As students at a great university, and one not necessarily considered to be inexpensive, we were just who the banks were looking for.  What does that mean for me, anyway?  Well, I can tell you from personal experience, it means they gave me the world as far as a credit limit is concerned and unfortunately, I enjoyed travel.  Traveling abroad with Elon and for pleasure became my favorite university pastime.

SGA releases applications for the 2014 spring elections

Elon's Student Body President, Welsford Scott Bishopric, released on Jan. 10 the application forms for the 2014 Spring Student Government Association elections. Bishopric encouraged students to participate in SGA, saying, "[it] offers the unique opportunity to play a formative role in your environment." The SGA constitution states that its main purpose is representing the rights and opinions of the student body in ways that are consistent with Elon University's mission. SGA also seeks to provide for appropriate student activities, and join with faculty and administrators in building a stronger and more effective educational community. The SGA Election Packet for spring 2014 includes an application, rules and regulations, positions available, and other information necessary for potential candidates. The election process involves writing a campaign statement, acquiring a set number of signatures from supporters and giving speeches.

Skinner, Khudobin back and producing for shorthanded Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes are a hard team to figure out.  Some nights, they will go out and play spectacularly, yet on others, players look lost on the ice.  Recently, the Hurricanes have been on one of their hot stretches. It has been an up and down season for the Hurricanes.  They have endured five losing streaks of three games or more, and the season just passed the midway point.  Since Dec.

Dan Le Batard ruins baseball tradition

I’m not sure about you, but when I hear the name, “Cooperstown,” I get the chills. I’ve never been to the small town in the heart of New York State, but I sure hope to get there one day.
