Women’s basketball carries tough defeat into new year

Even as the new season is set to begin for the Elon University women’s basketball team, there has been a focus on the way last season ended. In the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament semifinals, the Phoenix faced off against James Madison University, and had multiple chances to win the game late. But Elon was unable to make three potentially tying baskets in the final minute, including two 3-point tries from senior forward Same Coffer ’15 in the last 20 seconds, and lost 63-60. The Dukes would go on to win the CAA championship the next day, leaving an image that head coach Charlotte Smith decided to use. “Last year, after the season, Coach Smith actually put posters on our lockers of JMU holding up the trophy,” said senior guard Josepha Mbouma.

Europe excursion has Elon gelling

The Elon University men’s basketball team is in the middle of roster turnover, with five freshmen joining the already young roster. With so many new faces in, getting players to gel together was going to be quite the challenge for head coach Matt Matheny. But, according to Matheny, the study abroad trip they took to Europe in August has the chemistry better than every before. “I think it’s at an all-time high,” Matheny said.

The only lights were the streetlights and the dozens of candles brought by those in attendance, and of the shooting star one person saw as he arrived. Updated at 12:10 p.m. Elon junior Demitri Allison's death has been ruled a suicide, according to a report from UNC police. Allison died Wednesday afternoon after falling from a 10-story Morrison Residence Hall, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. According to the police report, the investigation is still ongoing, and it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the death. The story will continue to be updated as more information emerges. Triple the pitches, triple the impact

More than 90 Elon University students pitched their ideas for business ventures and social entrepreneurial opportunities, ranging from a pet rental service to a hunger prevention app, at the Triple Impact Challenge Nov. 11 in Upstairs Lakeside. The pitch competition, sponsored by the Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, aimed to promote entrepreneurship and innovation among Elon students. Even more so than previous iterations of the challenge, that included non-business majors.

Allison, a member of the football team, left campus Tuesday and friends, teammates and family asked police to look for Allison because "they were concerned for his well-being and emotional state." Shortly after Smith Jackson, vice president for student life, sent an email to Elon University students regarding Allison's death, a number of athletes took to Twitter to pay their respects to Allison.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
