Campus Recreation hosts Battleship: A board game with a splash

When walking past the pool in the Koury Athletic Center, you will usually see people swimming or diving but last Friday was not your typical day as Campus Recreation made a splash by clearing the swimming lanes at Beck Pool and dropping in canoes for an event adapted from a classic board game. The game is called Battleship and the title is not the only thing the board game and the Campus Recreation event have in common.

Search continues for the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

While construction on Park Place at Elon and the School of Communications garners most of the campuses' attention, the Elon University College of Arts and Sciences will be undergoing significant changes to its administration. The position of dean for the college was left vacant in January 2014 when Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar was appointed provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Western Carolina University. [youtube=https://youtu.be/uVWLKFoKRsw&noredirect=1&w=560&h=315] Dr. Paul Miller, a co-chair on the search committee for the new dean, said they are looking for someone who strives to produce success within the college. "We hope to really identify somebody who has the vision to continue a trajectory of excellence at Elon and at the same time somebody who can make sound hiring decisions, can be directly involved in faculty development, to help people continue to develop as lifelong learners and as scholars, teachers, and university leaders," Miller said. The dean for the College of Arts and Sciences oversees 19 departments, 42 different majors, and assumes the role of chief academic and administrative officer for the College of Arts and Sciences. Elon Junior and tour guide, Jenny Faig, said, while she realizes it is impossible to address each students individual concerns, the new dean should try to hear all student's voices. "I think that if there was a forum where we could all voice the specific problems we have there might be similar ones and she might be able to fix all of them with a couple simple things." Dr. Charles Irons, department chair of history and geography, says the search committee has done a great job selecting the candidates: current Interim Dean Gabie Smith, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Scott Furlong, and Dean of Faculty at Colby College, Paul Greenwood. Irons believes the right candidate is someone who understands the significant role the college plays for every Elon student. "Arts and sciences is and should be the center of the Elon experience and every student regardless of their major or even their school needs to take a majority of courses in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Elon Board of Trustee member honored with Elon Medallion, renaming of Colonnades E in his honor

Noel Allen, after serving 40 years on the board of trustees, was honored with an Elon Medallion on April 19, the highest honor given by the university. Allen grew up in the town of Elon and then was a student at Elon where he served as the student body president.  Allen has witnessed Elon’s growth as an institution, joining the board when enrollment was under 3,000 students. Allen has been a part of every long range strategic plan, since he was a student member of President Emeritus J. Earl Danieley’s first planning committee in 1966, University President Connie Book said. Allen also served as board chair from 2001 to 2003, when Elon transitioned from a college to a university and adopted the Phoenix as its mascot, Book said.

Elon University expansions leave off-campus residents scrambling

Her first night at Elon, junior Kelsey Eshleman was invited by members of Elon Young Life to a bonfire event at an off-campus house, affectionately nicknamed Full House. That night, Eshleman said she remembered thinking how cool it would be to live there with her newfound friends. Now, Eshleman is still close with many students she met her first night and is one of five people living in Full House. But after living in the house for this past year and signing her lease renewal for next academic year, Eshleman and her roommates received a message from their landlord in February — the house that had been a pass down in Elon’s Christian community for 15 years was no longer available to rent.
