Three weeks leads to another four months

Junior Laura Van Drie will be studying abraod in Copenhagen this fall. She will be writing regularly for The Pendulum about her experiences abroad and news developments in Denmark.  Part of the reason I came to Elon University was because of the study abroad opportunities. But before I went on my Winter Term trip to India and Dubai this past January, I wasn't sure if I actually wanted to spend a whole semester abroad - the thought of leaving Elon for a whole four months was a little nerve-wracking. After a few days in Dubai and three weeks in India, I knew I absolutely wanted to explore other countries.

Moving forward, looking back: As Germany progresses, its history is still evident

This summer, Melissa Kansky participated in The Germany Close-up Fellowship, a program funded by the German government that invites Canadians and Americans to explore how the nation has confronted its history. To understand how remnants of the past creep into present identity, one only needs to look at Germany, a nation, which despite its demonstrations of apology and progress, still carries the burden of the Nazi regime. "Germany is dealing with the Holocaust more than anyone," said Martin Schubert, a German-Jew and journalist. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe occupies the most expensive land in Berlin, located between the embassies of the historic Allied nations and within walking distance of the Reichstag, Germany's Parliament.

Playing North Carolina will provide invaluable experience for Phoenix football

Elon University football coach Jason Swepson has scheduled a second straight Football Bowl Subdivision opponent for the Phoenix to play to open the season. Last year, the Phoenix played Vanderbilt University and remained competitive through three quarters against a member of the most dominant conference in the FBS - the Southeastern Conference - but ultimately fell. This time, it’s the University of North Carolina, a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Men's basketball to host part of EA Sports Maui Invitational

The Elon University men's basketball team will open their season against a two-time national runner-up and host four games in a prestigious season-opening tournament. The university announced today that the Phoenix will take on Butler University, who lost the NCAA Championship Game in 2010 to Duke University and 2011 to the University of Connecticut, Nov.

Death of former Elon Academy scholar

Christopher Glockson II, a member of the Alpha class of the Elon Academy, died July 20 following an accident at his home in Brooklyn, N.Y., according to an email from Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of student life. Glockson graduated from Walter Williams High School in Burlington, N.C.

Performing arts alumnus ponders life after graduation

Recent Elon University graduate Matt Meigs ‘12 just closed the book on a whirlwind four years. As a music theater major, Meigs used his built-in support system in Elon’s Department of Performing Arts to thrive onstage, culminating in a principal role as Claude Hooper Bukowski in the Fall 2011 production of “Hair: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical.” The Pendulum spoke with Meigs about his time at Elon and how he will use lessons from college in the real world. Q: Where are you living in your post-grad life? A: I'm originally from Huntsville, Ala.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
