Women's basketball knocks off NC State

The Elon University women’s basketball team pulled off an upset Sunday, Dec. 13, defeating North Carolina State University 69-66 in a close game. It's the first win over NC State in program history after the Phoenix lost the previous eight games to the Wolfpack. The first game after a break for finals, which was played at Broughton High School in Raleigh due to renovations at NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum, was tightly contested all afternoon, with neither team leading by more than three points at the end of each quarter.

A gaming clash in the Carolinas

In its four years of existence, the Elon University E-Sports team has grown from a small, inexperienced club to an organization soon participating in the largest East Coast collegiate gaming competition to date. Elon’s team, along with 13 other schools in the Carolina Collegiate E-Sports Committee (CCEC), will have a chance to make a name for themselves at Clash of the Carolinas, a two-day gaming tournament held January 16-17. Teams from each CCEC college, including Elon, the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, Clemson University and Duke University, will participate in tournaments for the games League of Legends, Hearthstone, Counterstrike: Global Offensive and Super Smash Brothers Melee.

Immigration in Alamance County creates divides and support systems

It's a quick and simple transaction for most people. You hand your ID to the bank teller and deposit your paycheck but for Drucila Perez, this simple transaction stirred up enough fear to bring her to tears. "I showed my expired my driver's license and the teller told me 'Why are you driving with an expired driver's license?' so I just put my head down and started to cry," she said. More than two thousand miles from home and without legal authorization to be there, Drucila feared her time in the United States was coming to an end. Islamophobia. It's one of the hottest topics in society today. Some say it is spiraling out of control. With more than 50 occurrences of American Islamophobia since the terrorist attacks in Paris, France according to The Huffington Post, the topic is being discussed- and for good reason. A recent YouGov/Huffington Post poll shows that more than 50% of Americans view Muslims "Somewhat" or "Very" unfavorably.

Upcoming lectures in honor of Elon student killed by domestic violence

In July of 2011, incoming Elon freshman Lauren Dunne Astley was killed by her boyfriend in an act of domestic violence just weeks before beginning her time at Elon. Now, almost five years after the tragedy, the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund, a nonprofit founded by Astley's parents, will support the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture Series at campus in the upcoming months. The lecture series is being coordinated by faculty in Elon's Women's, Gender, and Sexualities Studies program which has partnered with the Office of the Provost, the School of Communications, and the Gender and LGBTQIA Center. The series will begin Winter Term and will last through Spring Semester with multiple lectures that will be free and open to the public. The first lecture will take place on January 11 in the Lakeside Meeting Rooms at 5 p.m.

A former Elon University student who would've been graduating with this year's senior class has died, according to an email from Chaplain Jan Fuller. In the email, sent Sunday afternoon to the class of 2016, Fuller said the university has learned of Katerina Diaz's death. Diaz spent a year at Elon before transferring because of medical issues, according to the email. There will be a Gathering of Friends at 7 p.m.

Elon University baseball team drops final game against Fairfield University

As the bells rang out on a warm noon in Elon, North Carolina, first pitch was called for at Latham Park as the Elon Phoenix and Fairfield Stags set for battle in the final game of a three-game series. Elon won the first two games of the series, thanks to a walk-off single by freshman Gar Hindle in Game 1 and a combined no-hitter in Game 2.

African Diaspora of Elon embraces culture with first-ever African Night

The African Diaspora of Elon closed the university’s celebration of Black History Month with the first-ever African Night on Feb. 28, with music, fashion, comedy and pageantry. Abdul-Malik Harrison, advisor to ADE and assistant director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education said though he has seen the campus put together amazing cookouts, parties and cultural events, African Night was unique and new.
