“Is opinion writing obsolete now, since everyone has their own already?” What a question to be pondering on a seemingly average Thursday morning, a question to which I can finally say no: it is not obsolete. Thursday started like any other weekday.

At Thursday night’s SGA Senate meeting, Senator Molly Shoop asked the Senate to consider voting to raise the student activity fee, which is currently too low to cover all allocations requested from the SGA. “I think this is something we need to take into consideration over the next couple week and think about if we need to raise it,” Shoop said.

Elon senior Courtney Whiting, a Connecticut resident, said she decided to register in North Carolina because she felt her Republican vote would make more of a difference in North Carolina than in her historically blue home state. Elon senior Jonathan Cart, a Texas resident, also decided to cast his ballot in North Carolina because he felt it would make a bigger impact here. “I felt like my vote would matter more here because Texas obviously will go red,” Cart said. Elon sophomore Dean Shapero expressed a similar sentiment.

Elon Political Science Professor Dion Farganis agrees, and predicts that if President Obama is re-elected he would appoint a liberal justice and Governor Romney would do the opposite. "If Obama gets re-elected and a conservative justice retires like Scalia, that would then change the balance," Farganis said.

Political ads and campaigning for the Nov. 6 election have been ongoing for several months, but the weekend prior to the election, as well as Election Day itself, showed the hardest efforts made by both Democratic and Republican supporters in Alamance County. “The Alamance County Democratic Party has staff volunteers at all 37 voting locations to (give out) sheets that have our candidates listed on them, all the way from the president down to the local races for judges,” said Anna Gerow, vice-chair for the Alamance Country Democratic Party.
