At Thursday night’s SGA Senate meeting, Senator Molly Shoop asked the Senate to consider voting to raise the student activity fee, which is currently too low to cover all allocations requested from the SGA.
“I think this is something we need to take into consideration over the next couple week and think about if we need to raise it,” Shoop said. “As we grow as an institution, we need to grow across the board.”
Executive President Darien Flowers recapped a meeting he held yesterday with leaders of other campus organizations. He said he called the meeting to discuss the need for campus healing in the wake of a contentious debate over the presence of Chick-fil-A.
“Throughout this process of discussion of Chick-fil-A, we have uncovered situations that need to be addressed on campus,” he said. “There are organizations that have had a vested interest in this discussion, and there have been a lot of emotions in this. How do we facilitate an environment where those discussions and emotions are safe and able to take place?”
He encouraged the Senate to involve itself in the healing efforts.
Flowers also addressed the politically charged comments he posted to social media after the Obama was reelected as President. He said he realized social media content is subject to intense scrutiny, and he apologized for any discomfort his comments may have caused the Senate.
In other news, the Senate passed a bill to express sympathy for those impacted by Hurricane Sandy in a 35-0-1 vote. The SGA will donate $2,500 to the Red Cross in order to help financially assist those affected by the storm.
