Issues in North Carolina play vital role in national election

North Carolina’s 15 Electoral College votes may seem trivial compared to the 270 total needed to win the United States presidency, but the votes placed in the state Nov. 8 will have a significant impact in deciding the next Commander-in-Chief. Since July, campaigns for both Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump have reflected the state’s high value, as each has made regular appearances. Clinton has even sent surrogates, including President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Bill Clinton, to energize voters.

Millennial voter turnout to play pivotal role in election

Millennials make headlines daily for social media crazes and popular trends, but on Nov. 8, they could also make headlines for their influence in the ballot box. According to a recent Pew Research Center analysis, millennials — adults born between 1981 and 1997 — are predicted to outnumber the baby boomer generation in voter turnout this election year.

Still, both candidates are vague about how they would fund their plans. I interviewed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on July 25 and asked him what he would do as president to address concerns of college students.

With widespread, tense emotions directed toward Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton — even from members of their respective parties — the country as a whole has seen a shift in partisan lines. Jason Husser, assistant professor of political science and policy studies and director of the Elon University Poll, has labeled this the “volcanic eruption of politics,” political party realignment occurs when large coalitions of voters switch from one party to another, along with certain groups being mobilized to vote, increasing or changing the electorate.

Elon president Leo Lambert shares his take on the election

As Elon University President Leo Lambert watched the three presidential debates with his Twitter feed pulled up, he couldn’t believe some of what he read. This national election with Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump as presidential nominees is one of the most bizarre he has ever seen. “I think my jaw was agape a lot of the time,” Lambert said.

Men's basketball thrashes Randolph in lone exhibition game

The Elon University mens basketball team had its first outing of the fall on Tuesday night, trouncing Division III Randolph College 88-43 in an exhibition match in Alumni Gym. The Phoenix shone on both ends of the floor, dominating possession in a game that saw them shoot 53% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc.

Volleyball sweeps NC Central to end nonconference play

The Elon University volleyball team got back on the right track Tuesday night, sweeping North Carolina Central University (25-20, 25-13, 25-17) in a nonconference match at Alumni Gym. “I think this game gave us a lot of confidence going into our last two weekends in conference games," said junior outside hitter Sydney Busa.

Back-to-back: Ciolkowski repeats as CAA cross country champ

For the second time in as many tries, Elon University cross country sophomore Nick Ciolkowski went to the Colonial Athletic Association championships and emerged victorious, defending his CAA individual title in Newark, Delaware Saturday morning. But Ciolkowski said he preferred this year’s method — a comfortable pace for five kilometers, a burst with around three kilometers to go, and then cruise control to a 13-second victory — over last season’s seven-tenths-of-a-second sprint to the tape. “It felt great — it was a little less stressful than last year,” Ciolkowski said.

Volleyball falls to Delaware in Pink Match

The Elon University’s volleyball team held their annual breast cancer awareness match, Pink Match today, Oct. 30, and although they put up a great fight, the team lost to the University of Delaware by a 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 18-25, 21-25) in Alumni Gym.  Pink Match is an event that is important to not only the volleyball team and their families, but to the community of Elon as well.

Aramark responds to student's campaign against Aramark

Elon University senior Marissa Costner is the face of the nationwide campaign for food provider Aramark to change some of its policies. Costner has been working alongside The Humane League, a nonprofit organization that aims to protect farm animals, to invoke a change in Aramark's treatment of animals.

Men's soccer loses 3rd straight match in 3-1 defeat to Hofstra

The Elon University men’s soccer team lost its third straight match at Rudd Field Saturday evening to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season champion Hofstra University 3-1. The match was level at 1-1 heading into the final twenty minutes of play, but the deadlock was broken when Hofstra freshman forward Luke Brown was able to collect a save from Elon redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Jegier and kick the ball into the goal, giving the Pride the lead.

Gathering of friends celebrates life of Elon faculty member

Students, colleagues, family and friends gathered in the Numen Lumen gathering space on March 30 to celebrate the life of Allison Keill, director of the Elon Curriculum Resources Center. She passed away March 25 at 50 years old following an 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer. The gathering of friends began with words from University Chaplain and Dean of Multifaith Engagement Kirstin Boswell before the floor opened up for attendees to share feelings and memories.
