Club hockey plays through late nights, long travel

HILLSBOROUGH — It’s 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, but it could be any Wednesday. For most Elon students, it’s time for bed, studying, or Netflix. But for freshman Drew Waetjen, he needs to set up the goals on the ice rink at the Orange County Sportsplex so Elon’s club hockey team can start practice. It’s a typical freshman duty, but an atypical time for a practice.

"Home" exists all throughout Elon

 

Home is an idea that many people — especially college students —struggle to define. Coming into Elon University means leaving all the different places you once called home. Naturally, freshmen then attempt to find a new definition of home upon arrival. For many, one of the most obvious places to find a family and a sense of community is in fraternity and sorority life. But, it is important to recognize that these organizations are not the only places to find your “home away from home” at Elon.

Elon releases Spring Cultural Events calendar

Elon University announced its Spring Cultural Events Calendar last week. Some of the highlights include guest lectures from a New York Times correspondent, a founding editor of The Onion and an ESPN broadcaster. “We look forward to hosting every event you see listed on the cultural calendar and hope students attend as many of our programs as possible,” said Eric Townsend, Elon’s news bureau director. One event the university is promoting in particular is Spring Convocation. Walter Isaacson, president of The Aspen Institute and former chairman and CEO of CNN, will deliver the address.

Running Water Shut Off in Academic Pavilions

According to an email from Amy Vaughn, a residential administrator, water was not available in the Academic Pavilions, East Gym, Powell House, NC Campus Compact, or Hillel House due to nearby underground roadwork.

Decoding the Shakespearean language

In a Shakespearean play that likens love to war, a unique rendition done by the cast and crew of Elon University’s Department of Performing Arts’ Winter Stock Theatre stayed true to the traditional tale of “All’s Well That End’s Well” while adding innovating elements to enhance the storytelling for modern audiences. More performances from Feb. 3-6.

Elon student arrested for Driving While Impaired

Elon student Grace Gaskin Shealy, 19, was arrested Sunday night after a traffic accident. According to the Town of Elon Police report, police responded to a crash on East Haggard Avenue at 11:38 p.m. Shealy originally fled the scene and was picked up by police in the Loy Neighborhood. Shealy was arrested for driving while impaired and driving after consuming under the age of 21.

I dropped, and it's going to be OK

 

Sunday, Jan. 31 concluded the chaotic and tumultuous week that is recruitment. When I first came to Elon, never would I have thought I would be a participant in Greek Life recruitment. But, as I got to know women in various organizations, I realized that all the stereotypes I had established in my mind were wrong. The girls involved in these organizations were nothing like I had seen in “House Bunny” or “Legally Blonde” (although I wouldn’t mind if there were some more people like Elle Woods in the world). Over the past week, I had some of the most amazing conversations with genuinely down-to-earth women on topics ranging from TV shows and the Franco brothers to how different cultures interact and communicate with each other.

Last-second layup gives women's basketball win at Northeastern

Freshman guard/forward Nikki McDonald made a layup with three seconds left to give the Elon University women's basketball team its third straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win, 56-54 over Northeastern University Friday afternoon. McDonald's layup was assisted by sophomore guard Shay Burnett, who picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Men's basketball edged by Hofstra, 66-64

The Elon University men's basketball continued its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) conference skid, falling to Hofstra University 66-64 Thursday evening. The loss was Elon's third straight and fifth in six contests, as the Phoenix tumbles down the standings to eighth place, touting a 3-6 record in conference play thus far.

International students encounter obstacles in assimilating at Elon

Elon University is ranked No. 1 for its study abroad program by the International Educational Institute and is one of the top 10 most globally-minded universities according to the Christian Science Monitor. But even with 50 countries represented at Elon, it is common for students to confine themselves in their existingsocial circles, preventing a globally integrated environment.

OPINION: AI poster competition proves Elon has entered AI psychosis

Elon University’s School of Communications and Love School of Business held the “Make Your Mark” artificial intelligence poster competition. The first of its kind on campus, the event drew the attention and ire of art and communications students. It featured a $650 prize pool and was held in three parts: a training session March 31, the competition April 2 and the award ceremony April 3. The outrage lasted the entire week. Has Elon entered an AI psychosis?
